First of all - a happy new year for everybody.

I've spend some insignificant part of my last 2 weeks of holidays making some music of a more alternative kind. Last month I posted the sacred graveyard dance generally inspired by Paulini's latest book, Brisingr.

This time I continued with this inspiration and took the first chapter from the book as inspiration and created a "soundtrack" to this chapter.

Gates of Death

This requires a serious amount of parental guidance. It does not contain any profanities of any kind, but being deeply settled in the Gothic Rock* genre, some sensitive fans might not be comfortable with it. On the other hand, if you enjoy bands like Midnight Syndicate, Nox Arcana, Paramaze, Lacuna coil, or even Slayer, you might find this just up your alley.

If I continue with the inspiration from Brisingr - which I hope to do indeed - not everything will fall in this same sub-genre. The overall ruling genre of soundtrack music would still be maintained.

Lastly, if you have not read the book, and you like fantasy stories like Lord of the rings, I would recommend you to read the book indeed. The book is relative cheap compared to most other forms of entertainment. It would cost you less than about 1 week's worth of Internet access (in South Africa that is), but it however does require some of your time to read it.

* In my view, the term "Gothic" has been overused far too much when it comes to culture and art. Today, this term does not refer to the Gothic religion as such, but rather to the culture that has developed, which is often being referred to as "Gothic". In general, I use it here when referring to a dark subject containing elements of death and fantasy. In this sense, Lord of the rings may be regarded as a Gothic text as well. Please feel welcome to google any of the bands referred to above, but please do not get into the trap of thinking only heavy death metal are allowed to claim ownership of this genre.

Hi Sep
I enjoyed the sacred graveyard dance, it was an excellent example of Symphonic/soundtrack music. In your efforts I like in a particular way the effective melodies, since they work very well in these kind of arrangements.
I appreciate the odissey series, very good quality stuff.

This one sounds even more interesting
Great choirs, good tension-building, nice release with the acoustic guitar and the epic lead over it.

btw I'm not familiar with the work of Paulini. In case I'd decide to read something, do I need to start with the 1st book ? is that a trilogy or not ?

My best wishes for a Great 2009

Cheers

Thanks

Yeah that would be best to read from book one. It is in fact a four book series (fouroligy / quatrology / whatevorology). Brisingr is the 3rd book and the fourth is expected sometimes next year.

Nice work on this. The beginning does fit well with the symphonic/gothic vibe of Nox Arcana and Midnight Syndicate, and the ending has a sort of neofolk vibe...a bit like early :Of The Wand and The Moon: material. The Gothic Rock tag is probably a bit misleading to some of the "older" (over 30) folks here though that remember the old goth rock acts of the 80's and early 90's. (Christian Death, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, on up to anything released on the Cleopatra label). Your orchestration on this is great, and the production sounds quite excellent as well!

Thanks vespers.

Glad to see so many people around here who know and recognize the goth acts. The cleopatra label had some real nice acts. Haven't heard of any new acts comming from them in some time though.

As you mention, the goth rock label is a bit misleading when compared to 20 to 30 years back. I find it difficult to find any other tag to put to it. The dark ambient tag has been claimed already. There are various acts now, like nox arcana etc who are happy using this tag, so I'll settle for it as well.

wow !

very very filmish.
It has a strong mediaeval quality - i close my eyes and i see pilgrims walking on dark mountains with tourches in their hands on a mission to find the spear of destiny.

The dark choirs are sooooo dark
awesome stuff. On repeat for the last 10 minutes

And now this switch to some very clean and nice strumming :)
Sologuitar sounds dreamy.

Extremely theatrical and very well produced

THANKS.

Thanks Remco

Your praise is highly appreciated.

Tough track to my opinion. Starts rather like a modern thriller (maybe Seven) quickly turning into some highland or victorian score that breaks with the more modern style of an accoustic guitar playing. Interesting play, a bit too mixed up with respect to timely styles regarding my likings. Technically great, though.

Cheers, Stefan
