I'm in the midst of a new studio build and now that I've got most stuff in place and installed I'm thinking about some new computer monitors.

I've got 2 old aver monitors that run 1650px reso.

I'm looking to possibly go to trip screens 22-24 inch monitors. I've also considered one of the larger ultra wide monitors.

All this said I'm pretty frugal haha any creative way to save money here? Older series monitors? All I really care about is having a somewhat thing bezel that matches on all 3 screens.

Thanks,
Kevin

Asus is probably your best bet. Some of their 22-24 inch monitors are very reasonably priced, you can pick up a recertified VS247H on Newegg for $109.99: http://goo.gl/8zBFdm
(I had thought about getting one, but sadly I ended up with BenQ.)

If you're not comfortable with recert products, then you can also find them on Amazon for $150, with a 23-incher coming in at $129, and a 21.5-inch at $110: http://goo.gl/nmSFts

All of these monitors are VESA-compatible, so you'd be able to put them on a custom mount.(If that's your kind of thing.)

If that's too expensive for you, then take a look at ViewSonic. I had one of their older monitors once upon a time, and it served me well before being passed on to my little sister.(It's a 4:3 ratio screen, which should say something about it's age.)

Feel free to drop me a PM if you'd like to discuss this more in-depth. :)

Seconded, The Asus range are constant performers at the budget end, and they have a few ultra thin bezel models too for mult-screen setups.

Thanks guys! The two monitors I have are actually asus but they are going on 8 years old and would be nice to have higher resolution. I will check out and see what deals there are. Defenitly not against eBay either :-)

Thanks,
Kevin

I use the Dell 3415W and really love it. It's 34 inches wide, 3440x1440 resolution, slightly curved, and has a razor sharp display. I used to use triple monitors, but find I am more productive with one large screen. I use Windows 10's multiple desktop feature to flip between track view and mixer view. As a bonus, it has a KVM switch with USB3 builtin, so you can connect it to more than one computer. My second connection is another Windows box that I use to host plugins with VE Pro. It's a bit pricey, but not much more than 3 cheap 24 inch monitors. I got mine on Amazon for around $750.

I was thinking about that but $750 is a bit. I use them for audio engineering so sometimes I actually like a little separation. Long story short id pay maybe $500 max but with eBay the asus VN247H-P are around 100-120 a piece. I also have a 55 inch display I use from the couch. Bit bugger is driving me crazy because I need to raise it 6 inches to fit my monitors. Poor planning.. :/ lol

If you do decide to look at the ultrawide option, I've heard several good things about the LG line.

These two are both 21:9 with 2560x1080 resolutions, one 29" and the other 34":

Those look good price wise. Around $350 used. I've defenitly heard good things about LGs screens.

I may have to consider that.

get a tv

I've got a Samsung 40" 4K 120Hz TV hooked up as a second monitor in my studio. It give you LOTS of real estate, although I find the upper part of the screen hard to view. This option is definitely nowhere near as sharp as a computer monitor. It's fine for occasional use, but I find it to be hard on the eyes for continual use. Your mileage may vary. :)

Yeah I actually have a 55" Samsung hung on the center of the wall that's hooked up for tv and mixing and composing from the couch but it's way to big for up close viewing. I have enough vision problems already. I can't imagine what that would do to my eyes lol.

I decided to go with 3 asus 23" monitors. These specifically https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/291590542315 with a VESA mount. Retiring my old monitors one for my server and one for my windows machine.

I haven't ordered them yet but I ultimately went with these because I do have vision problems and I'm finding anything more than 1920x1080 gives me trouble visually and I also like having the actual seperatiom from the thin bezel it helps me clearly define my work flow.

This is probably different for everyone but that's what I'm going to end up with.

Thanks for all the help,
Kevin

i have the lg 29um65, and i have to say i absolutely LOVE it. i went from 2 wide screens to this this ultra wide screen...and while it is slightly smaller than the 2 screens...not having the break in the middle more than makes up for it.

it looks fantastic. its great for using with a daw, for watching movies, for playing games...anything and everything. i would absolutely 100% recommend it.

one niggle though, and i dont know if they changed it on the newer 67 model...but if you plan on flush mounting on a wall...know that because of the placement of the ports you will only be able to use the hdmi port. not really a big deal.

Looks nice but I prefer separation in my DAW. Between my arrange view and mix view, score view and midi edit etc. it's just my personal preference. It's one of the main reasons I choose to stick to multiple monitor setup. The other thing is that I am a Mac user and I couldn't find enough out there about splitting the screen into 3 panels even if I went with a 34". It's possible that I over looked it but it seemed that LGs software was optimized for 2 screen split which for me I really like to have a 3rd screen for whatever I might be doing. Whether I have Netflix opened or the Internet or midi edit I have 2 dedicated monitors and the last for manipulating whatever I feel.

This is definitely a choice that comes down to workflow and personal opinion. After all this I still wasn't sure so I went to a local store to look at some in person. The resolution was to high I've got very poor vision and almost none in my left eye so this was a very personal decision :P

At the end of the day I'll be around or slightly under $400 for the vesa and all 3 screens. Just waiting to sell my 9200.

I'll post some pics once I get everything up. My goal in this studio space is to be able to record any where in the space as well as mix and master. A big part of that was having lots of screen space as well as portable screen space. So if I'm working at the desk and decide to move to my laptop and the couch that transition should be almost instant. At this point I'm up to 5 computer monitors 1 laptop a 55" tv plenty of iPads and old phones. Not to mention several servers in the back rooms to run vsts and store data. This is about a 10 year dream finally coming true :D
