In the "cheap, but not free" range, these four are very good IMO:
- Sugar Bytes WOW - simple, but cool modulation options and excellent vocal/formant filter types
- FabFilter Simplon - little brother to Volcano 2; same great filters (27 types), but lacking all the modular options; clean UI
FabFilter Micro - baby brother to Volcano/Simplon; simple, but deceptively powerful
Tone2 BiFilter2 - little brother to FilterBank 3; 47 filter types (!!!) and more, very clean UI

Nobody has mentioned Native Instruments Driver? I find it to be an exceptionally interesting LP filter (also has notch). It's very characterful though making it kind of a one trick pony but damn does it sound sweet!
Cheers!

U-he Runciter is a huge, round sounding filter with a big knob that's easy to grab but unfortunately it is only available with the Uhbik bundle.

True that.. In reaper you can use the dry/wet control (built in for each effect in Reaper) to start off somewhere without all the distortion but yeah, I see what you mean.

Some things not yet mentioned:
GBand (free) -- good for hard shelving
ZapFilter^2 (cheap) -- can do some really nasty things, or just sounds nice.
Uhbik-Q (not cheap) -- for shelving and color (it's more EQish)
Runciter (not cheap, but part of Uhbik) -- more creative and good for wild distortion too
Guitar Rig (not cheap, but you might already have it?) -- not a traditional choice unless you're actually playing guitar, but sometimes worth thinking about
Maul, Ohmicide, Kombinat -- multiband distortion can be used in filterish ways. Maul is actually pretty good at filter modulation.

Why not use/learn the filters in Cubase? Just to learn what filters do; then you'll have knowledge and be able to make the right choice for you.4lb Kitty wrote:
I need something versatile with options.
I know next to nothing about filters, so if people could explain why they like a particular filter plug, I'd appreciate it.
But thanks for giving us all the chance to recommend our favorite.
For no reason other than the ohmies are crazy, Quad Frohmage.

I really like the original free TAL filter (1st version, the red one). It gets lots of use here. The sound itself is full of character (I usually drive it pretty hard) and I use its envelope follower a lot. Did I mention it is free?

Probably a good idea. It's just that they don't offer a ton of options.bluedad wrote:Why not use/learn the filters in Cubase? Just to learn what filters do; then you'll have knowledge and be able to make the right choice for you.4lb Kitty wrote:

I'm can't speak to the sound quality because, as I said, I really don't know much about filters at all.
Actually, if someone wouldn't mind explaining some of the terminology, I'd appreciate it. I know what high-pass, low-pass, and band-pass are, but is notch removing some of the spectrum in the middle, leaving highs and lows?
What else should I know when it comes to filters?
