Electro Harmonix Memory Man vs Memory Boy (Deluxe)

I've been looking into getting a Memory Man but find it a bit expensive. The Memory Boy is nearly only a third of the price so I was wondering if there's really such a huge difference between these pedals. I'm planning to use it not (primarily) with a guitar but rather as a studio tool to have all kinds of stuff run through it (Synths, Drums, Vocals...)

Man deluxe is echo/chorus/vibrato and boy deluxe modulated delay only, which give you something like chorus but not quite.
I have boy deluxe, and I'm not overly impressed, sorry to say. Loosing highs kind of, and I used it for guitar only. If going for fullrange stuff like synths look around and really test it. Effects made for guitar mostly might not give you full range.
I would have wanted some tone controls as well.
I will replace my boy deluxe.
I have a cheap Artec analog delay which I feel is just as good, not all the options - but I don't need that tap or modulation stuff. Almost a third of boy deluxe price.
I have an old Digitech RP100 multieffect - and I like delays better in that. And that itself is much cheaper than only this delay. It's digital but emulate analog really well I think.
I might look at TC Electronics Nova delay or something else which I read is seriously good.
If more like studio work look at rack units as well and multieffects that you can combine effects, and you get presets which are very handy to switch back and forth.

I sold my 70's vintage MM on ebay a year or two ago, and when I fired it up to test it, I was pretty stunned at how bad the signal quality was. Once you got over 200ms, you could hear all sorts of artifacts in the delay, and background noise and overall signal strength were MUCH worse.
I don't know if things have gotten better, but I had over 300 views and a nice bidding war for something I would barely bring on stage today, much less the studio. lfm is right, just about ANY modern delay will beat its specs, at a better price. Just know there's a nicely modeled MM for use in Amplitube Free that you can get for $15 in gear credits!
I'd take the money and buy sepatate tape, analog modeled and digital delay plug ins in the AT Custom Shop instead. But the cool factor of EH gear is undeniable, I had a whole floor full once!

Thanks for the input. That Artec pedal is really spectacularly cheap, will have a closer look at that! I'm not so sure if I need a digital outboard FX processor because I'm actually looking for something that adds a bit of a dirty layer to my almost all in the box productions.

You can have a look at Waves Kramer Master Tape plugin.
You can run very lightly on full mix, or as heavy as you want on anything else.
Waves Manny Marroquin bundle has distortion as a separate knob on a couple of those plugins.
But the list is endless of distortion and saturation stuff.

I have the Vintage Time Machine. It's pretty good for the money, I just make it 100% wet and stick in the mixer's effect loop.
I haven't tried it, but you could also look into the Memory Toy. One minus is the small knobs though.
