There have been so many nights where I was with friends, getting loose and out of our minds, while listening to The Doors.
There is no way that I could ever escape the influence that band had on me personally or musically.
RIP Ray Manzarek.

I was watching the LA Woman doco (classic albums) over last Christmas break here in Oz and there was quite a bit of Ray playing his parts and talking about how it was all put together. Great guy and great music.

I have tried multiple times to play the kind of bass lines that he played with his left hand and something similar to his right hand playing, but to no avail - I'm going to have to be a hell of a lot better keyboard player to even think about playing his simplest stuff.
While arguably all 4 contributed to the Doors sound, his is probably the piece that it would miss the most had he not been part of the band.
Thinking about Meffy's anecdote, the only one I can add is that The End truly is something special on acid. One of the few songs that really sucked me in and spat me out again altered.
Doors albums on the commute to work playlist this week.

any electronic musicians eve play an old skool organ? a real one. its the most uninspiring piece of shit for people that are used to todays bazillion sound capability synths. but WOW, the doors made that organ into pure heaven. i cant even hate. i think anybody that appreciates music would find it hard to not like the doors.

I completely disagree with that. They are great and there's no soft synth that comes close to making me think it's in some way more inspriring. It's probably why Ray had little time for synths, and why they have lasted so long with the advent of better technology.AstralExistence wrote:any electronic musicians eve play an old skool organ? a real one. its the most uninspiring piece of shit for people that are used to todays bazillion sound capability synths.
I have played them and if I had the money would certainly invest in some classic tone wheel and electronic organs over anything newer.

Really sad news. RIP Ray Manzarek
I got heavy into The Doors after watching the 1991 movie. It's one of the few pre-Kraftwerk'ian bands I care about.
For some reason or other I didn't check out the post-Morrison Doors albums until quite recently.
I think the song Piano Bird is among the Doors' best, with some fantastic playing by Ray
