Panning Around the Plynth with Rodney

I've always wondered how the guitar on this Rod Stewart gem was done -- manual panning back and forth or automation triggered by frequency or...? Anyone know or think they know. Maybe I should first ask if anyone knows the song -- from the days of truly great rock music and a wonderful band, the Faces.

If it was before the invention of the digital computer audio sequencer (probably mid-90's), then all automation was done manually. That's a near-true blanket statement.
