Guitar recommendations for a beginner

I would agree on starting out on (steel String) acoustics, if for nothing else than the strength training it offers over electric.

*At least IME, I've never tried an electric guitar that was harder to play than an acoustic one.

Playing is such a subjective thing that It's unrealistic for advice to be offered blindly and accept that simply because something works for you it will work for others.

You've got to have the strength, or you can't play anything, I don't think that's subjective at all.
