Pattern Chain SMIV

Hello -

I am not quite sure what this means (copied and pasted from SMIV user's manual):

'Number of elements in chain. Pattern numbers.'

What are elements in the chain? Are they chords, or single notes, etc.?

What are the pattern numbers? What do they identify?
