Creating a record scratch

How to make that sound...

I want to make a record scratch from... scratch :hihi: (forgive the pun) in Logic. Well from a pre-existing audio sample of course. How would I go about doing that using the sample editor, or perhaps a plugin? And I want the right kind of sound, I'm guessing a sample with not much tone to it and plenty of noise. Yeah I could go looking for samples of this but I'd rather learn how to make it because I want to try to do more unique things and I also want to replicate the sound of a real turntable.

Smooth pitching up & down in a curve, that's basically what happens when scratching. I think lots of plugins can do that.

But isn't the sound created by a sample's playing speed being changed (thus the change in pitch) and since on a turntable you would spin the record back and forth that's changing the speed from fast to slow while also switching rapidly between playing it forward and reversed...

Something tells me it's a bit harder than just changing the pitch though I guess it would get a similar effect...

Ah yes, there's the reverse audio as well...
But basicly you got it there.

What also may have an influence is the RIAA curve. When a record is played back at different speed, it does not match up with the normal eq curve anymore, changing it's timbre.

Go find a scratching plugin, make it yourself easy. There are lots. Enter "scratch" in the Quick Plug-in Search widget here at the top right of your screen.

last time i needed to use a "scratch-like" bit of a sample in a track i was working on, i just used the oldish AnalogX scratch little app..but i guess there are less "oldschool" way of obtainin it (i mean everything inside the daw)
