Hi all
Since the release of the M51, which is primarly a Phase Distortion ( PD) Synth, it may be that there are users who don't really know WHAT PD IS!! myself included.
To get started, here are some excellent links
Phase distortion Theory
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_distortion_synthesis
Programming CZ synths
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casio_CZ_synthesizers
PD Synthisis with audio examples
http://homepage.mac.com/synth_seal/html/cz1.html
The last link is pretty good.
Basically it seems like PD is like FM, but uses a wave to distort a sine wave into other kinds of waves. In M51, we also mimic the types of waveforms that were present in the CZ series which included some "res" type waveforms with resonance built into them.
also, if you use an envelope to shape the wave, it's like the sound of a filter opening and closing..so thats why there were no filters in a PD synth. You use an envelope to alter the Timbre.
any more thoughts from you guys??..this is just a prilimary from me.

Thanks for the post I was aware of P.D synthesis before this, but had neglected to do any research into it. It seemed like another also ran that never got anywhere.Increasingly I have noticed a number softsynths featuring it as there primary synthesis method, so these articles will be of great use.

FYI: We're working on small paper that will cover the basics of PD synthesis, so stay tuned!yemski wrote:Thanks for the post I was aware of P.D synthesis before this, but had neglected to do any research into it. thx Tim...
What's kinda odd, is that I developed something like this myself a couple of years ago without knowing the history. I've called it skew modulation, since the wave get's skewed one way or another. I have some variations on the basic algorithm, but there it is.. nothing new under the sun and all that!
nice lynx, tvm!

(*) Yamaha's implementation of FM was actually phase modulation, which is also what phase distortion is)

my other modular synth is a bugbrand

Looks like there's some serious phase confusion going on here...duncanparsons wrote:I had atan from the summer, but it's phased out now. We could go the whole hog for phrase distortion, should we wish.. :hihi:
btw what kind of viable hybrid are we talking?
