She Rocks, and Performs, and Programs, and Engineers, and…

This is a guest piece by Laura Whitmore, founder of the Women's International Music Network (WIMN).

As you may be aware, a vast majority of the readers of KVR Audio are male. And while this is really not an anomaly in our industry, it is a shame. The Women's International Music Network works toward changing that paradigm, welcoming female performers, audio professionals, programmers and more into our industry and creating a platform to shine a spotlight on role models in the industry.

As the pinnacle of this effort, the organization produces the She Rocks Awards, an event at the NAMM show in Anaheim that honors women from all walks of the industry. Featuring performances, celebrations, and acceptance speeches, the event inspires others in the industry to pursue their music and audio dreams.

This year one of the honorees was Leslie Ann Jones from Skywalker Sound. Perhaps one of the first female engineers and producers to break the gender barrier, Jones has manned the board (pun intended) at countless sessions for top artists, films and projects. She had this to say,"Thank you for honoring women for being women. We are different and that IS okay. It should be celebrated as it is tonight. My how things have changed in the years since I've been doing this."

And while this change is evident, there is still a long way to go. With women on the NAMM show floor still in minority status, there is a dearth of women in all areas of the industry, but perhaps most especially when it comes to software programming, audio engineering, product development and other technical areas.

Organizations like Soundgirls, Girls Who Code, Women's Audio Mission and others seek to change this landscape. Check them out. Welcoming women into the audio marketing will bring a fresh face to product offerings and add to the pool of potential purchasers. It just makes sense.
