Hi there,

I´m very much intrigued by UADs "Voice Of God".
But: No native Version available.

Is there any "really comparable" equivalent out there that works based on same principle ?

or something else to look at ?

Bark of Dog will get you the exact same sound and is free. And it has more features.

I can't emphasize this enough: the UAD Voice of God is just a Hi-pass with some resonance. There's no saturation built in or anything like that. You can literally mimic this with most EQs - including the free ones in your DAW.

Don't believe me? Plugin Doctor that and compare. Save yourself the money.

I have been wondering for years what Boz meant when they said Bark of Dog was a joke name - finally I get it

i liked the UAD demo, haha ;)

Thanks for the feedback and the tipp !

The UAD on is nice and easy to use, and especially if you have it on a bass and kick group, you can tweak quite complimentarily.

You can get a similar effect with filter/EQ, but won't be as quick.

Of course there are other ways to handle boosting bass and clashes between bass and kick, like side chain.

Louder than Liftoff Chop Shop can also do this thing.

I must confess Voice Of God was a pointless disappointment for me. Fundamentally it didn't do what it claimed, and nothing a filter / eq can't do.

I think it has been proven that VOG is basically just a high-pass filter with a resonant bump something most stock EQs can do.

VOG sounds much more creamy and better than the BOZ effect. Try it on the TB-303. There is a lot more pressure! No alternative? Submarine from waves? Well, I get similar results with the cambridge EQ, but more precise.

I actually was fiddling with the hardware version of VOG at a friend's mix room the other day. It sounds like exactly what it is, a clean resonant high pass filter. It has decent internal headroom for a cheap analog circuit, but it had no discernable character or other interesting qualities to me. I used it on a close mic snare, kick, and toms subgroup to add a bit of uniform bass that would trigger the compressor more consistently, and it did what one would expect. For an analog mix filter it's reasonably well tuned and simple to control, but I'd rather use the free Melda MBandpass for this kind of simple trick and really I'd rather have a full digital eq so that I could tackle any other frequency changes at the same time. I definitely would never pay hardware or UA software prices for this. I'd hope that the digital version, at least, uses like no resources to run.

I agree with myself of yesteryear.

I declare Voice Of God to be among the most Emporer's New Clothes of effects.

You could prolly get the same effect with a preset from Izotope Vocalsynth combined with Ambeo (or any Surround Panner)
