Always confused again when someone mentions "dm". Then I Google, and find out that it's an abbreviation for "direct message".
It's "PM" for private message as long as I can remember. I'd really use that one, because, having different abbreviations only confuses.
And, if you take a look up there in your account stuff, it clearly says "Private messages" as well, not "Direct messages".
"Direct message" doesn't make much sense in that regard anyway. The segregation is between public and private messages, not between direct and indirect messages, or something like that.

New here too, I guess it makes sense to limit spam but kind of a pain for us real humans
