Ah, thanks, Bob, but I really never freeze tracks. Don't know why, but it goes straight against my grain for some reason. I need to feel like I can alter stuff on the fly, which I'm doing frequently, even in the oldest parts. So, yeah, somehow I rather suffer to feel free than to suffer for constraints... ...I'm weird!
Again, thanks! MuLab, by the way, has proper freezing now, if I read that correctly. Haven't tried it, yet, though.

Yup, I hear you with changing things on the fly - has to be the best way, but in the end when it all goes pear-shaped, then I find I just have to freeze. I do as many tracks as I can live first though - I don't iterate through the tracklist!! Just a matter of keeping "sounds" and "themes" in your mind as you progress.
But ... we all get there in the end eh? For better or worse - hehe! Looking forward to your track of course.
cheers,
dB

Oh, it'll be a weird one!
...yeah, it's sometimes really fascinating to listen through old tracks, hardly remembering the pains and aches, but enjoying the trip down memory lane. When ever I listen to Mantrolls again (Mantra Evo, or what that one was called), man...it was really painful, but ended up being so much fun.
I wonder, if Tyrell will also create a memorable set of tracks. I'd imagine so. It might become my longest song for the OSC.

How did you manage that kick drum. It is absolutely phenomenal!!! Loved the track top to bottom by the way. I'm new here and might take a stab at this. Looks really fun even though I have very little idea on creating percussion.EDGEK8D wrote:No groups anymore, eh? So we just share it on our page and here? Hi everyone, this is my first post. I have only been using Ableton native synths for the longest time. This synth sounds great and efficient!, thanks for the link and fun contest.
The track is pretty muddy, not very close to that Bladerunner epic sound. I would love to find the reverb used on that soundtrack. I'm looking for an alternative to Ableton's, with a long linear release time that sounds flat.
Anyhoo, greetings all.

eq8 and comp on most tracks
one track with corpus, resonator and verb
beat repeat on a couple tracks and on Tyrell drum group
multicomp, comp and limit on master

Hi there and cheers for the submission. As for a reverb on the free side of things, you could try Freeverb 3; it's pretty good... the UI isn't great but the sound is. There's also Ambience, which is quite good sounding as well. Both of these are cross platform, if you happen to be using a Mac.opoint wrote:... Regarding use of beat repeat, that effect is not allowed as it samples incoming signals (glitch effects are explicitly outlawed, but if it was MIDI-only, it would be fine). Corpus and resonator may also be somewhat on the line, not sure if there was ever an explicit ruling on a resonator bank, but they quickly mangle the sound to something the synths can't typically do... perhaps if the effect was very subtle it might be okay, maybe I am unclear on what those effects actually do.
Anyway, plenty of time to get rid of the beat repeat and maybe Brian will chime in about the Corpus and resonator bank.

Kick drums are easy....once you practice a little. Synthesizing percussion isn't bad, but for me its knowing how to process it. The samples we all buy and use have been processed to hell and back to get them to shine. Don't be afraid to EQ the crap out of things, distort, and compress.
Kicks can be made by either using a self resonating filter (turn the resonance to 90-100%) and then play with the envelope and filter cutoff to get a thump. I prefer the pitched sine wave. Set oscillator one to sine wave. then assign envelope two to the +pitch of oscillator one, attack, sustain and release of zero, and just a tiny amount of decay. Then I usually make a separate snap or crack for the top end energy, bus them (thud + snap/crack) together, EQ, a touch of distortion, and compress.
You're in luck though......Tyrell N6 is a great synth.....really the best freebie IMO by far. There are some good presets including kick drums.
Also, this (http://synthesizer-cookbook.com/SynCookbook.pdf) is where I started. It's Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook, and where I began started learning synthesis. Has a whole section of how to make percussive sounds. once you practice making all of the sounds, you'll get it down.
I can't tell you how much more fun making music is for me creating my own patches instead of preset surfing. Also, putting a good mix down on a track is really the key to making your kick sound nice. You can have the greatest sounding kick ever, and if the mix is crap.....the kick will die of death.
Good luck.

Hey, nice job! I love the vibe. I'm a huge fan of the movie and soundtrack. Good luck trying to make it sound like Vangelis CS-80!!!! This article (http://www.musictech.net/2014/12/landma ... oundtrack/) says Vangelis used Lexicon 224 digital reverb.opoint wrote:https://soundcloud.com/opoint/kvr-u-he-tyrellcorp

Also, while I didn't use it on this track, for a freebie, I like this one:

Logic's Space Designer convolution reverb is pretty darn good so that's what I use typically on these contests.
Good luck.

Not my entry
https://soundcloud.com/opoint/kvr-u-he-tyrellcorp-raw
I'd replace the original, but soundcloud wants me to be a "soundcloud star!" and pay some chick showing her back. So here is another raw version, with all embarrassment. All other fx scrapped and some midi changes.
Thx for the reverb recommendation. Anyone using studiomux with ipad? Been digging it mostly. I love Addictive Synth but it does not keep sync. Peace.

Hi, find attached my version of the CS80 brass. Another one is in the Kujashi bank (Mr. Greek II).opoint wrote: The track is pretty muddy, not very close to that Bladerunner epic sound. I would love to find the reverb used on that soundtrack.
Reverb: Mr. Vangelis used the Lexicon of course.
Good free VSTs are Sanford Reverb and Smartelectronix Ambience.

Another vote for the Sanford one, it was recommended to me earlier this month when I had this same question, and it has been very nice . In the context of all plugins out there, not just the ones allowed in the OSC, be sure to check out Valhalla Vintage Verb if you're into the oldskool Vangelis verbs!
