Very cool idea! I've been doing very short pieces for a long time (heh heh) but never this short. I think the challenge is in making something that's 10-20 seconds long that has a full dramatic arc: opening, buildup, climax, cadence.

Well, technically, the pieces don't have to be of similar lengths...and, if the requirement of silence between each piece appears to be optional there seems to be the possibility of making some Musique Concrete/Turning The Radio Dial montage work (as found in parts of Zappa's Lumpy Gravy, Zorn's Naked City, some cartoon/radio/film music) which the modern DAW makes so much easier than back in the days of the tape recorder...rachmiel wrote:Very cool idea! If you strung 10 pieces/songs together, back to back, with no pauses ... I would think they'd have to be clearly (a) different and (b) consistent in themselves to qualify as 10 individual entities. You could of course do a theme + 9 variations as long as it was clear where each new variation began ... hmm, might be fun!

Argh, these unholy out-of-our-comfort-zone experiments
I have an idea for this month. It could turn out to be either pretty powerful or totally lame. One moment it attracts me, the next I want to drop and shift-delete the draft file. I wonder which way the wind's going to blow.
But yesterday we had 10 minutes of snow followed by scorching sunshine the rest of the day, so it's the traditional month of polar opposites.
Cheers Matt

I have this vision of an aging songwriter -- one time Master of Rarefied Miniatures (Come Again?, his one-hour album of 167 songs, was as popular as the Pet Rock for a brief moment in the mid-70s) -- attempting in his dotage to make a comeback, figuring that the egregiously short attention spans induced by rampant Internet addiction had re-prepared the world for his haiku-like microtunes, and releasing a 10-song teaser of love songs, each in a different genre: pop, country and western, folk, jazz, electronica, glitch, dubstep, dub, reggae, etc.
This might be one of those ideas that is best kept in the realm of theory ...

I have around 6 songs complete. One track is clicking on at a monstrous 35 seconds and will need to be edited. It's best for me not to attempt guitar solos anyway, so it's probably for the best. This stellar 10 tracker will have some educational value.

No shift-delete! Composing part done, now to add tracks and improve sound, which could take longer.
Another 4AM session. Thank heavens for Red Bull...
Cheers Matt
