That said, and without taking into account all the requirements (pre-WWII, orchestral, etc.) I would now like to propose that any serious conversation on this topic not ignore the X, Y, Zs of modern music. :hihi:

Xenakis

Zorn

Zappa

Someone else can supply the Ys...:P :ud:
Thanks to all for taking the time to educate me on classical music.

I had heard Xenakis Metastasis a few time before. The first time I hated it but in subsequent occasions I began to like. I am still not crazy about Metastasis but will get it just to see if I now appreciate it more.

Zorn is not for me. Zappa I like a bit but when there is so much more music that I like why compromise?

Will definitely check Carter out. Thanks.

In an earlier time I may have liked the player piano music. I prefer full orchestra granted with many exceptions.

I'm not very experienced in classical music but I would suggest these

Giovanni Allevi

Nicola Piovani

and if you want something more modern
Dardust

and especially all the music of Ennio Morricone :)

You might like:

- Vaughn Williams - Symphony #6

- Bob Zimmerman (not Bob Dylan! ;)) - New Wilderness

Also I could recommend:

- works by Debussy and Ravel (Ravel has a nice orchestration of music of Satie (I think it's called Parade)

- Saint Saens - Symphony #3 ( the 'thundering' Organ Symphony!)
. . . . . . . . . . Dance Macabre

- Stravinski - the Firebird

- Berlioz - Symphony Fantastique

- Carl Orff - Carmina Burana (warning: heavely vocal!)

And if you can stomach it try some music by Tristan Murail (his 'Sept Paroles' is truly a trip 'out of this world'. And yes it is heavely vocal, mostly 'choral' :D)

Finally a tip, don't be put off if you don't like (or 'get') a certain piece of music at this point. Try it again in some 10 years and you might appreciate it. That is my experience ...

Classical music is the only true 'music as Art' experience ... :harp:

Vaughn Williams is great but I may have never heard the sixth. I will check it out. I have a couple of his CD’s
I found a couple operas by Bob Zimmerman so not interested at this point. I could not find the “New Wilderness”

I love both Debussy and Ravel and have some of their CD’s
Wow! Saint Saens - Symphony #3 ( the 'thundering' Organ Symphony!)
I have Dance Macabre. Excellent!!!

Stravinsky - the Firebird, It’s been ages since last heard it complete. I have in separate movements on my CS’s. Excellent.

Have it and love it! Berlioz - Symphony Fantastique

- Carl Orff and Tristan Murail too bad your suggestions have vocal.

Yes, wait ten years, I agree. I went from hating adagios to now preferring them. Thanks for the suggestions and advice.

Mr Arkadin wrote:OK, I know he's a bit obvious, but your description seems to fit some of Philip Glass' output. I've tried to go for the adagio movements:

Symphony No.3 (Third Movement)

Symphony No.9 (Second Movement)

Violin Concerto No.1 (Second Movement):

Visitors OST - The Day Room

The rest of your description (no vocals, no dissonance etc.) probably removes 80% of what else I would recommend.

If you'll allow me one loud, dissonant with drums piece then allow me a momemt of Narcissism and I'll put in Glenn Branca's Symphony No.16 "Orgasm" for 100 guitars as I am playing in it! (You can see me far right with yellow guitar strap):

I used to like Both Zappa and Glass and I suppose I still like them. I listened to your videos but did not get turned on. What I am after is music that I love. Lately it has been Sibelius symphonies. So I know the feeling when I strike gold, but sometimes I do not realize it immediately as in the case of Sibelius.

Glenn Branca's Symphony No.16 "Orgasm" for 100 guitars not for me. No reflection on your guitar playing which was excellent.

Thanks for taking the time to suggest.

Interesting vocals but they are still vocals. Good try!

You mentioned Tschaikovsky. I do hope you know his 5th Symphony?

It's his most daring (and beautiful) work!

Also you should know:

Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition & Night on Bare Mountain

Another tip: also try to find different 'playings' of classical works. E.g. different orchestras and different directors, different interpretations. It really can make a, .. err .., difference! :)
