Doesn't Amplitube have a free version? Get that, then use it to demo the paid models and pick a few (they're pretty cheap) that you like and you're done. I think it's the best sounding guitar amp modeling software out there. Scufflaw's is really good to, but I think that's just a paid all at once package and I'm not sure how expensive it is.
The free version comes with downloading and using the Custom Shop, which installs all of their plugs which is a bit of a nuisance. There's not very many options included in the free version, and even fewer that are actually good IMO, but it's a good way to get the core software, then cherry pick the amps, cabs, effects, mics, etc you want/like.

I still need to demo the Scuffham stuff - everyone seems to rave about it, but amp sims are fairly low on my priority list right now as Amplitube does what I need for the moment. (and much better than Guitar Rig 5 IMO)

A Mustang I V2 usb amp is around $100 on sale, and includes a download
for Amplitube Fender LE, providing Twin Reverb, SuperSonic, and Metal500
amps, that can be used in the free version of Amplitube, by using it's
'restore my gear' option.

It also includes download to Fender Fuse, ampsim environment which has
about 14 amp models, and a range modeled stomps/racks, in a nice gui for saving setups,
presets, online access of collections, and accessing 24 saved sounds
from the amps main dial. Has cabs, bias/sag controls. You can record by usb,
or 1/8 line out. Also has an Ableton Lite download as part of the deal.
The amp itself is nice in a room <= 400 square feet.

Used V1 Mustang 1's are about $50, with 2 fewer amp models. Fuse is a free download,
might have to contact Fender support if owner registered the Fender LE already.
Cheers

VERY interesting approach, glokraw! I wouldn't have thought of that! They're all Fender amp models, though, right?

Mostly Fender models, and a few that are Marshall and other favorites,
a video, accurate except it's the older V1 in this video, and the reviewer misses
that there are 24 presets on the main dial.

Thanx for this link. Didn't know a GUI version of simulanalog exists.

I'm going to post what someone PM'd to me in regards to this post in case any others would benefit from his suggestions.

"First and foremost, consider the "donationware" stuff:

http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com
http://www.igniteamps.com/en/audio-plug-ins

And then:

http://www.kuassa.com/products/amplifikation-creme/

As "cheaper" ware. Vermilion isn't bad but it's best for clean tones. For anything slightly crunchy to full blown gain Creme is ace.

WORST CASE SCENARIO, you are out a bit of time and have to search for cab sims for the free "ignite" software. "Gods cabs" and "Seven deadly sins" are where you should look first for those.

Can't hurt. Cheap, efficient, and flexible. AND x64 :D If you use the "donation" stuff, please donate a small fee. It's killer to see those guys kicking ass!"

+1 for kuassa vermilion

Consider a second hand V-Amp or POD. I think they cost less than any software and are still very versatile.
I've tried different VSTs and in the end I still prefer the V-Amp sound.

FreeAmp3 can also do some pretty fine sounds. Listen to my latest track where all the guitar parts where done through FreeAmp3:

Waoo, I'm impressed by your song "bright lights (inside my head)",
and I'm even more impressed by the fact that you've done it all with
freeamp3 - a great amp indeed! :)

I definitely second Ignite amps, especially for high gain stuff.

can't beat Guitar Rig 5 + Rammfire for high gain
