Indeed, some people go much further than Moffitt in describing EDM's impact on Vegas: in a feature in the New Yorker last year, one promoter claimed that casino magnate Steve Wynn had made so much money from the four nightclubs in his Vegas resorts that even gambling was now a mere "amenity".

Modern DJs are similar to those old-fashioned street-organ players who used to crank the handle to make music. The only difference is the amount of monkeys jumping around in front of them and the amount of money being thrown at their feet but the level of talent required is pretty much identical.

It's what the kids call it these days and that's fine by me because I really don't care about all those labels and sub-labels anymore, none of it means shit anyway.Numanoid wrote:There was no EDM in the 90's, thank God!lotus2035 wrote:Disclaimer: I was into EDM for years all through the 90s. I don't get the dance part of EDM though, to me it seems these kids like mostly to punch the air, and sway a little, not really dancing.

In most of that music, there isn't really much of a rhythm so much as a pulse being hammered out by that massive, boomy kick. In my opinion, there needs to be a bit of push and pull, a bit of tension in the dynamics, to really make me want to dance. Footage from those kinds of parties looks like half of them are a bunch of egotistical maniacs basking in their own relevance. We're the beautiful, relevant people in the beautiful, relevant place! It's a far cry from the old raves, where the idea was to forget yourself, what you look like, who you are, etc, and get lost in the music.Numanoid wrote:I don't get the dance part of EDM though, to me it seems these kids like mostly to punch the air, and sway a little, not really dancing.
