The virtual metal band thread

I kinda choose to revel in the synthetic fakeness of virtual guitar. It's emulating the playing styles and techniques that's important to me. I would rather listen to something that sounds more like a synthesizer played in the style of a guitar, than sample/physical modeling based virtual guitars that have the timbre down perfectly but sound more stale. I have my own FM metal attempt here:

And then we have stuff like... The Algorithm. Novel enough to be put on a decidedly metal label

It's a bunch of layers of FM8 for the guitars (divided into "high" and "low" layers like is often done in guitar productions) and a lot of careful tweaking with velocity tracking on various stuff to get muted notes on lower velocities. Drums are a mix of samples layered with FM drums on top.

Did this one a few days ago for the 20th anniversary of Cobain's death. It's not perfect, but I had fun doing it!

Distorted or acoustic? lol...For the distorted guitars, I'm using Shreddage 2, Electri6ity and V-Metal. For acoustic, I'm using Evolution Acoustic Steel Strings.

Hi guys, this looks like the perfect thread for this problem.
I am not a guitarist. It is new territory to me. I am having trouble with the fx chain and amp settings. To much distortion overpowering the tone, sort of like when you apply too much hard digital distortion to any signal. But the only way to lose that distortion I lose the tonality of what makes it sound like a metal solo.
Using Electri6ity Les Paul P90 Amped and DI, with various combinations of Guitar Rig 4 and GTR 3.5 settings, and sometimes Ableton's EQ, Reverb, and Compressor.
Tried EQ'ing before and after every stage. And I'm sure Impulse Responses will eventually further my sound. But for now it's just coming down to not being able to get the fx chain and amp settings right (or the specific settings on each device)
I've spent 5 days scouring forums, youtube, copying settings I see on video's, I guess I'm just stupid.
Help.
Link to sound I'm going for (attachments below if don't want to go to link)

I know he shows his settings, but I don't have amplitube and can't replicate it in what I do have. Plus, in electri6ity, he uses the amped version of the Les Paul and doesn't show the settings of that.
I would attach my failures I don't have enough posts (or something). So here is a link to another forum that has the attachments:

Yea, I seen that he was using the amped, but it he didn't show the settings so I assumed it was the default settings, so that it what I tried. With and without the amplitube settings (done in guitar rig as best I could)
I also noticed he used "muted to sustain" articulation for every note, doesn't that mean every note is picked, no hammer on or pull of like in a real solo.
Or am I way off base here??

There are settings to trigger the hammerons and pulloffs automatically based on speed, even in the muted-sustain mode.. not sure where that setting is exactly though. I use that mode mostly, as well. What Tha Frell wrote:...I also noticed he used "muted to sustain" articulation for every note, doesn't that mean every note is picked, no hammer on or pull of like in a real solo.
