Jace-BeOS, so is the flat UI a fad or "Corporate cheapassness"? Can't really be both now can it. Funny how you claim it to be unintellectual, while you yourself display such fine intellect.

Cheapness and fads aren't remotely mutually exclusive.jbw wrote:Jace-BeOS, so is the flat UI a fad or "Corporate cheapassness"? Can't really be both now can it. Funny how you claim it to be unintellectual, while you yourself display such fine intellect.

IMO this fashion is related to the tablet proliferation, and the "go with your fingers" way of thinking. Suddenly, OS makers started to think that EVERYTHING has to follow that concept, and started to compete over which one would make the most "clean" OS. Hopefully, users will raise their voice loud enough for them to stop this stupid movement.Jace-BeOS wrote:Cheapness and fads aren't remotely mutually exclusive.jbw wrote:Jace-BeOS, so is the flat UI a fad or "Corporate cheapassness"? This is not "clean" - this is simply ugly and stupid, and a complete waste of the graphic resources modern computers usually have. We are travelling "forward to the past".

Or they simply think it looks clean and elegant. At least on Android 5+, they definitely have a point with that. I also think Windows 10 looks way better than Windows 7 e.g. In any way, they wouldn't do it if the people thought it'd look or handle crappy.

Really? Judging from the reactions on the (absurdly ugly) icons Microsoft released on Previews of Windows 10, I wouldn't be so sure. And I don't agree that Windows 10 looks better than Windows 7 - quite the opposite, IMO (but I guess this falls in the filed of personal taste - I always liked the graphis of Windows 7, and always found Windows 8 ugly, so, Windows 10 still falls behind Windows 7 in that aspect).chk071 wrote:Or they simply think it looks clean and elegant. And there are many users who think like me, and very few raised defending the opposite. I guess the majority simply don't care.
But the OS look is one thing - usually, it's hidden, most of the time. Not the case with the applications we use the most - those stand in front of us for hours.

I think the opposite is the case. More and more care ONLY how something looks. If it looks cheap, they'd refrain from using it. And don't make the mistake to mistake Internet opinions for what the majority of users think. The majority of users ISN'T on internet forums, blogs or whatever. Everyone does the flat design now. It's a trend, and trends usually don't come out of nowhere.fmr wrote: I guess the majority simply don't care.

That is what I also think. The whole cheap thing is just a classic argument used by anyone who is more of a graphics aesthete.el-bo (formerly ebow) wrote:as do i. ¡ya esta!chk071 wrote:Or they simply think it looks clean and elegant

You're confusing "OS makers" with "Microsoft".fmr wrote:IMO this fashion is related to the tablet proliferation, and the "go with your fingers" way of thinking. Some of you have perfect 20/20 vision, but, not all of us do.
So, for ME, clean and "flat" GUI's are more useful than the other GUI's.

Im not a 'fan' of flat design, but it doesnt actually bother me in any way. Neither does the full-on photorealistic stuff. Hence, Ive always wondered why people spend so much time bitching about the pictures of UI design elements (the 'G' in 'GUI'), and not bad interaction design (the slightly more important 'UI' part of GUI).trimph1 wrote:Some of you have perfect 20/20 vision, but, not all of us do.

Good design is about the 'graphical user interface' not the 'graphical pretty pictures.' Personally, i dont really care if its flat, skeumorphic, or sodding pornographic, if it works sensibly its useable.
If it doesnt work sensibly, ie , it doesnt allow one to do what's required as easily and intuitively as possible, no change in the visual look ever solves that.
