are sonnox plugins updates free?

Say I have gen 3 eq, are updates to any newer gen are free? (4, 5, etc)

Updates are free within a "generation".
Think of a generation as a major upgrade.
The sonnoq eq was updated for 10 years (for free) before it got a new generation.
Updates are bugfixes/compatability with new os and such.
I don't think they ever changed functionality in a free update.
Sonnox was bought by focusrite last year, so this might be different in the future.

I can tell you that I have my Sonnox Limiter G5 license from 2015 and the latest installer update was in 2022 for Mac and 2023 for PC. I didn't spend any money since 2015, it's still at G5 after all these years.
Maybe in the future Sonnox will make a new generation an will make us pay to upgrade, who knows! But so far, it has been a solid one-time purchase.
