I'd love to nail this bass sound, but haven't got anything close yet. You can hear it in isolation at 4:33.
There's a tutorial on youtube for this but it uses an ableton live synth, which I don't have.
From 300hz down I can get the sound pretty much identical but above that there's this 'donk' that eludes me. I guess it comes from FM
Any tips? Could this be done in Massive?

Could it be a simple pulse sound with pulse width modulation? And filter envelope stuff of course. Should be easy enough in Massive.
Answer to self after testing a bit: No, probably not.

Yes, that didn't seem to work.chk071 wrote:Answer to self after testing a bit: No, probably not.
Currently trying to do it in Sytrus.
Chris-S, have you any tips on what waveforms to use (for the carrier and modulator)? Or what ratio? This is pretty much unmapped territory for me.

I'll check when I'm back to home.
Basically it's just trying. For carrier normally sinus is used, otherwise you can not get the harmonics back to zero during decay phase.
Carrier to mod ratios 1:1 gives you saw-like spectrum, 1:2 square-like and 1:3 pulse-like.

Here is the tutorial:

So he uses a square as carrier (plucky env), saw as modulator, a slight fast lfo, 24 db low pass filter, compressor, delay, slight chorus.
Note that the saw and square waveforms in FM8 are kind of smoothed, so you will not get exactly the same sound.

Just got a new pair of headphones too to replace old broken ones, so gear's in check.
Thanks for helping out!
