Amplion free is a good tester, minus the pedals. The advantage of the full version is replacing the power amp stage and having the pedals. I normally don't like a lot of distortion because it can cause out of control frequencies that wouldn't normally exist in a real amp, but with amplion this really hasn't bothered me. Try inputing a TS-808 or green pedal through the OR MOD channel with a standard mic setup, one cone one off center, if you haven't already. With the full version, I've got a few of the included distortions stacked after that with no problems..frequency-wise
