fwiw - I'm of the group of users who loved this plug but got f%#ked by the copy-protection scheme that Mr Linn chose to utilize. A very gracious fellow who offered to refund my purchase price, even after having used it for 2 years.
What happened; a HDD failed, was replaced and whatever current win7 anti-virus/maleware mechanism would not, for the life of the both of us(Mr Linn and I) allow the VST to be re-authorized.
Kinda feels to me that Linn would rather make musical instruments than wrestle with MS/Apple and their moving target(s) of OS requirements. Some developer offered him an ridiculous price to cure all of these woes . . . and he said, "f*#k it"
kinda sad, but I'm over it

RL could have easily outsourced the removal of copy protection to any talented developer. Like someone said before, this plugin has been cracked since day 1. And indeed, checked it out on a test machine and it installs like a regular version. No need to do anything fancy. I doubt the people who patched out the CP did have the source code. It might be crude but still people who paid for this plugin could at least keep using it. Of course, long term viability is another matter completely.aMUSEd wrote:Yes exactly, this seemed the obvious point and reason for stopping development, if you have no developer then you can't, y'know, develop. It is another classic example how a fixation with idiotic copy protection schemes benefits no one. Plugin cracked on day one while dev has to pay crazy money for CP. Paid users getting screwed over and over by stupid restrictions and finally completely locked out of their software. Only ones to have a good experience are those who downloaded an unauthorized version.

Outsourcing the "removal of copy protection" may not be a viable option if, as quoted, this plugin brings in less than $5,000/year in revenue.

I live in California. There is no risk of rain here.Sendy wrote:OP means overpowered. Like when you're playing Risk of Rain and you have a lot of Leeching Seeds, the Icicle Barrier, Barb Wire, and your use item is the Jar of Souls. With a few other select items you can just walk into a bunch of enemies and they'll die. They'll hurt you, but you hurt them more, and the Leeching Seed means as they get hurt, you get their health. INVINCIBLE! If you ever get into trouble, just use the jar of souls. Shit going off everywhere! Lots of healing!

Glad I didn't buy it. I was intrigued but always felt it was a bit overpriced. To think that part of that was due to license costs for technology that would ultimately lead to its demise is the pinnacle of irony.
I feel bad for Roger Linn, because he's such a great guy and of high standards, I'm sure the situation is extremely frustrating for him more than anybody else.

I don't think he could do that easily. For one thing a cracker might be able to use some brute force approach to break the copy protection, but they don't care whether that introduces other bugs, and it is another thing entirely to add another system, or to do so without unforseen consequences or bugs. Plus given that fact that it was already not working on modern Macs. I think drawing a line under the whole thing is unfortunate but understandable.robotmonkey wrote:RL could have easily outsourced the removal of copy protection to any talented developer. There were pretty significant development problems with the first version, too: http://waveformless.blogspot.com/search?q=adrenalinn

From a recent "NFO" file:
"NOTE:
This includes true keygen for this abandonware, dedicated to the Roger/Linn and legal users. We will give our middle fingers to both Nalpeiron and WayOutWare. Sad to say we cannot even buy from them "

I have no horse in this race (other than which old nag I want to lose the latest kvrgument), but this post resonated with the point about copy protect killing the software.klinik wrote:From a recent "NFO" file:

I find it somewhat amusing and ironic that the only way to future proof, to continue to use what you've paid for, is to download a crack and use the keygen.

didn't even know there was a plug in version of AdrenaLinn.
anyway.. seems $15k a year for copy protection is nuts. or is it? how much does your average developer pay for 3rd party copy protection?
probably more sustainable to just provide a registration process and a serial number. find a better business model.
and fuuugggg... 3 years for a new version? that's lame. nice job way out ware! though i'm sure there's more to the story it's not hard to roll the eyes at wayoutware who can't even handle updating their own plug ins let alone handle the contract work from others.
i guess it's hard to find the right people to work with???

Hi all,
I'm sorry that I only just noticed this thread. But I'm more sorry to have discontinued AdrenaLinn Sync because I really liked it. I've just sent the following email to AdrenaLinn Sync owners, which gives more detail about why I felt this was my only choice.
- Roger Linn
Dear AdrenaLinn Sync Owner:
I’m writing to inform you that as of April 22 of this year, I am regrettably discontinuing sales and further development of AdrenaLinn Sync. Here’s why:
1) I don't know how to write plug-ins, so AdrenaLinn Sync was developed in conjunction with a small software developer called Way Out Ware (Jim Heintz). I did the design, graphics, presets and testing and Jim did all the underlying code. While it was a great plug-in at its release in 2010, its 32-bit format has gotten someone old and our installer can’t be installed into Mac OS X Yosemite. I’ve been waiting for three years for Jim to deliver a 64-bit Yosemite-compatible update—much less a 64 bit VST or AAX version— but he seems unable to finish it. And he prefers not to give me access to the source code, so trying to find someone else willing to finish it isn’t an option.
2) As of April 2015, our copy protection provider more than tripled their annual fee to $5000, which is about double my current annual income from AdrenaLinn Sync sales.
So without an update from Jim, no access to the source code, and the prospect of paying more for copy protection than my sales income, I feel I have no choice but to discontinue AdrenaLinn Sync.
That said, I'm still supporting the existing customers. And while you can continue to use it on currently-activated computers as long as you want, I regret that you won't be able to activate it on new computers after May 10, 2016.
If you bought AdrenaLinn Sync on or after November 10, 2014 (18 months before the activation cutoff of May 10, 2016), I’m happy to refund your purchase price after you deactivate AdrenaLinn Sync on all activated computers. Instructions for deactivation can be found on our site at Support menu > AdrenaLinn Sync.
This situation is unfortunate because I think AdrenaLinn Sync is a very inspiring and musically-useful tool.
I do thank you for liking AdrenaLinn Sync enough to own it and I apologize for this unfortunate situation. It's too bad because I think AdrenaLinn Sync is a very inspiring and musically-useful tool.
Best regards,
Roger Linn

I'm not sure where you heard that but it's not true. No one has offered me anything to cure any of AdrenaLinn Sync's problems, and my development partner Way Out Ware won't even permit me access to the source code to let anyone else work on it.Mister Natural wrote:Some developer offered him an ridiculous price to cure all of these woes . . . and he said, "f*#k it"
Also, it is not my personal style to say "f*#k it" to anyone for any reason.
