Anyway, while I have heard such sounds before, I didn't know there is a term for it, let alone dedicated plugins

There is such a sound at the beginning of Patrice Rushen's Number One, that's the first one that comes to my mind. And maybe Quincy Jones' Ai No Corrida.

Any synth can do a simple white noise sweep.
But yeah there are a lot of 'specialized' tools that are really cool if you have the right samples to feed into them.

Ive used these, and they are all great-

Whoosh from MeltedSounds, Reaktor ensemble
WaveWarper from SoundMorph, standalone
SweepMachine from UVI
Prodyon Liftor, Kontakt
S-Layer ensemebl from TwistedTools is infinitely useful and can be used to roll your own risers/splashes.

And dont forget the original, and free, Whoosh vst from xoxos-

You can sweep any synth or sampler with Xils Ramses. Real time controlled ( Velocity, wheel, note position, note on etc ), enveloppe controlled, LFO controlled, Masks ( advanced step seuquencersand more ) controlled , or all of that ... simulatenously.

Just saying ....

UVI's Sweep Machine is a great tool. Otherwise you can always just bring white noise into a synth and make your own.
