Being a sax player myself, the most versatile and least artificial sounding sample library I encountered is the VSL alto sax, extended library. It has a wealth of articulations and doesn't sound cheesy at all. But if you want the real thing, learn how to play it.

Just a question - what do you find artificial as far as SampleModeling goes? To me their stuff sounds better than VSL... And definitely a lot more playable.

I'm pretty impressed by Chet Singer's Ampere Reaktor ensemble, which has Physically Modeled sax and clarinet waveguide modules. "Controlled chaos" is the best description, great for mapping aftertouch and other CCs to harmonics, overblowing, multiphonics, etc.

All good!Sampleconstruct wrote:I never tried SM, so I don't know how it sounds. That's why I wrote "I encountered".
Try and give them a shot when you can

Well, I would never publish any music including sampled saxophones, so my search has long ended.

If sampled saxes are ok, I like Magix Independence Pro Suite saxophones. Really good expressions without unrealistic vibratos like some I've tried.
Huge library with many useful instruments.
How about industrial percussion and orchestral drums as a couple.
Not so common in libraries.

I remember trying to program a sax on a normal VA synth, I did not get very far The sax has such a peculiar sound, very nasal and edgy, yet intense, very hard to do. Not to mention the breathy sound one sometimes hears, especially when the sax is played softly...

Xoxos Aerophone is now free, it does brass stuff, a little weird and very cool sounding. Not saying it can specifically do a saxophone.

Nice! Based off the old Dash Signature VST. I still have the original Dash one.

WarpIV Music's are pretty convincing. I have the Mr Sax line from SM and I still use WarpIV for parts.
SampleModeling for SWAM is an advancement over their Kontakt line, I'm pretty convinced. I have the Kontakt line. I don't have the EWI so it's a fair amount of writing in CC lane; the WarpIV has gestures you keyswitch to [and some basic SIPS] which would be a LOT of work in SM, for instance. But so is cobbling together a solo by gestures.
I have the VSL bass sax. VSL is always an excellent sound. I haven't experienced the others in the extended articulations, but I have a sense of not enough bite for what I tend to look for, the bass sax at times sounds like a bassoonist was playing it. OTOH hear Guy Bacos over to VSL demos with the tenor sax in a noir movie-type cue. Sounds great.
