I want to program my midi controller similar to an electribe. On the electribe you hit the drum part, and all those knobs are assigned to that instrument. The device only has like 8 sets of knobs, but u can control multiple units by accessing it. I would like to hit a button on my midi controller to change the same sets of knobs to a different CC parameter. Is this possible in Ableton? I dont want to assign 8 different knobs to control the pitch on 8 different times.

Like is there a way to block the midi controller signal to passing through the audio or midi channel? So i can hit or hold a button to allow access to the channel i want to control without shutting off the plugins?

Post

Yes, using controller scripts

Each channel has a different instrument loaded.
As you switch between channels the controls youve assigned on each of those instruments/effects are loaded.

For example this is how the Novation SL Mkii works with live, I use a script available from the Ableton forum.
Basically it makes using Ableton more like a bit of hardware.

I use multiple controllers including a Launchpad, faderfox LV3, with scripts, great fun and no mouse or screen required

Skychance,

Interestingly enough my company is developing 2 pieces of software that do a lot of what you are talking about.

The company is called Nyrv Systems and the two products are AGENT (an effects aggregator) and ANATOMY (a multi instrument virtual controller) The first product we will launch is AGENT which while incredibly cool and useful probably doesn't meet your need exactly. But Anatomy will launch a few months later and it will give you immense level of control over megasynths like omnisphere which has 8 channels or it can give you control over 8 separate instruments and an effects rack.

Keep an eye on what we are doing by following us on twitter @nyrvsystems. You can visit www.nyrvsystems.com as well but right now it is just a place holder with some graphics on the pages.

Let me know what you think

I'm really surprised no one posted help on this. Everyone always says how hardware is a waste of money, but basically this proves that wrong. If you cant easily set up a midi controller to do what a very old piece of hardware to do, then i guess invest in hardware.

Please if anyone knows how to do this help. It seems like there must be a vst or program that can do this.

at what point is a midi controller not hardware in the first place? and why are you complaining that your host doesnt do what you want a controller to do?

what you're asking for is pretty much already existent in any midi controller with its own patches, ie most of them. its not necessary for ableton or whatever to do something extra.

i have no idea what you mean here. Surely all you'd need to do is set up your controller so that patch1 (for example) sends CC1-8, patch 2 sends CC9-15 etc etc.

If what you need to do is remap CCs because your controller is 'dumb' and only outputs a fixed set, try midi16CCRouter from Insert Piz Here. Its a regular VST plugin so you can set up any presets you need.
Alongside it you'll find plugins that do a vast variety of useful other stuff with MIDI messages, btw.
