Synth1 has to be mentioned. A very good all rounder and with a whole host of patches available, it can be a newcomers best friend.

Ableton 9 should have a nice array to begin with...unless you are specifically looking to break into VSTi.

Ableton 9 should offer a lot of what you need. Welcome to the world of VSTs. We guitarists still need them sometimes.
I'm a Reaper user personally, but used to use Ableton. I hope version 9 is more stable than 7 was.
All the best to you.

my daw is sonar and it came with some great synths but Synthmaster is my fave. Sampletank was on sale last Christmas & I snaged it as well. Those 2 and the free stuff I found online plus what came with my daw is enough to do most of what I want to do. 1 for samples the other syhnthesis. Free versions of sampletank and synthmaster are available,
Prodigious, obxd, antitranspirant, mphasewave, voyager, synth 1, oatmeal, firebird, dune be, minimoque luxus, nabla, deputy, monofury, pg8x, sq8l, m theory, aas player, and also always snag the magware at computer music magazine through the vault. alchemy cm has more presets inluded than their free player and poly kb player cm is great as well.
