Yes, strong laws, heavy policing, will clean our system, will clean our environment, will clean our streetsCompyfox wrote:Learn to evade such companies - sure.
But what if you can't (i.e. the core of your environment, your host)?
Once again - food for thought.
Another company without a demo version, no refunds and Win x86 only

For example, I'm using REAPER. I like it because of its flexibility and routing. But there are some missing MIDI editor features and I don't like the endless menus from the SWS extensions...
But do I write huge lists to Cockos Inc. what I'd like to have? Or about the bugs when my REAPER is crashed again because of some plugs? Or do I write here at KVR complaints about all the missing MIDI features in REAPER?
No, I've found my way to work with it despite the missing features & some bugs.
And that's the same with Cubase. You can learn to work with it and to find workarounds.
If you couldn't work with Cubase at all, then the only way is to change the host... But other engineers/producers/musicians are working with Cubase, too, so it seems to be usable, at least...

Usually, no demo + no refund + no resale = no purchase.
I can make an exception if the tool is known to be good and/or if I've purchased other things from the company in the past (so I know what to expect - bugs included ), but I'm not so keen on this... Usually, not being able to demo something is something that stops me.
If the company is new/unknown on the market, has no demo, offers no refunds and doesn't allow resale, I feel like I'm going to play at the casino (which is something I would never ever do). This has nothing to do with the quality of the product (it can be great indeed), it's just that I feel difficult to put my trust in the company (it can be the best company of the world, but I'm not given reasons why I should trust it).
When I buy somethings, I'm putting my trust in the seller (even if I can demo the product, there's a refund policy and so on), so the less elements I'm given, the less I can trust and the less chance I could buy...

While I don't disregard the idea of "monitoring your used time" for a production, I highly question everything else resolving around it.
I mean, people haven't got a stop watch of their own anymore
Maybe it can double as an egg timer, for that perfect boiled egg

A lot of BS in the software industry for sure. In the end you have to be smart enough to avoid the pitfalls, the clever advertising, the deceptions... sadly not everyone is (ex: older generation). It always surprises me when someone comes up with a software solution that just replicates something you can do in many other ways. I keep thinking, "Who are the dopes that buy this stuff?"
Re time tracking for Win: I use this Free Stopwatch. But you can also save a project version when you start a work session and then subtract the last version's save time from the first one's when you finish. I've done that whenever I haven't been mindful about my time tracking but I need to bill for time.

Obviously I generally agree with OP. These are stupid practices. But is it a huge deal? I'm not sure.
In addition to what OP said I think there is another annoying and dumb practice around - needing iLok or eLicenser dongle for demo. And also requiring full blown site account creation for free plugins. If I encounter anything like that, it's immediately in the "don't bother" category.
Is it a big problem? I guess not for me as in those cases I tend to vote with my wallet. If the dev does not allow me to try out the product beforehand or makes the process more annoying as it should be I will just skip it and move on. It's the same thing with intrusive copy protection - I just skip the product and buy from someone else. End of story.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
