I almost never boost with an EQ, so in a rare occasion i absolutely need to boost, i just use whatever EQ i have at hand.

is pretty creative for insane boosts. Sometimes I wonder if it is actually an EQ or something else in disguise ;-).

And yeah, the DDMF stuff on the whole will give pretty reasonable results when doing silly boosts.

When the engineer catches you doing it, just say: It's a filter!

But really, your ears really are your best friend here.

It does actually take quite a well trained ear/brain to discern between different frequencies and most definitely different decibel boosts/cuts, at subtle amounts.

But your noggin should react quite quickly when you have pushed something far too FAR.

I know that in every eq book I read, it said, NEVER CUT OR BOOST MORE THAN 6DB.

Well, I regularly cut or boost 12Db or was that dB? (Meffy?)

;-)

When you do subtle tweaks of a coupla dB here or there, they call it 'EQ'.

When you do insane boosts of 18dB there or here, they call it a 'Filter'.

Please feel free to disagree.

Well, if I remember correctly my DSP-coding years (was 6 months actually :D ), every transformation of your audio frequencies is filtering, everything is filter in fact !

And every transformation of you time-domain content is distortion.

So everything is filter and distortion !

(Any up-to-date competent dev correct me if I'm wrong ;) )

I boost with whatever is used on the track or whatever is in the chain before recording EQ wise. If it works then it works, I did have a spell of over analysing everything way too much and found it led to nowhere useful most of time and trusting my ears and gut works/still does works a lot faster. Along with fist f**king 'rules', I know everyone's MMV but that's my 2 pence FWIW.
If it needs some heavy handedness then so be it

Redline EQ, Sonimus SonEQ, DDMF 6144 and IK Multimedia Program 1A are my favorites for boosting.

Tell me about it, Because sometimes they just don't shut up, do as their told and most of all need 'telling' twice, In my book that's one time too many. Non-brand new and still unimproved dose of pv
