I'm looking for some string samples to use for pads and demos. I'm not a composer or arranger, so I don't need crazy tweaking and geeking.
For synth style strings, the UVI String Machines looks promising. Is there anything better?
I don't know where to start with "real" strings. Ideally, I'd like a quartet over an orchestra. Something that would be use in country/folk/indie. I don't need it to sound like Frank Sintra.

Dune CM / BE is rtas compliant I believe and the best thing about that synth to me is the pads and string sounds.
also alchemy CM, synth 1, Zebra cm, Rhino cm, the free version of IK's sampletank has trons as well as other sounds that would be worth having.
if you find the post were cm plugins are free in the title there is a link you follow to get credits to use at Zinio and they will let you download their program and have like 10 + issues of online magazines and the cm plugins are available online once you have the latest issue so that is a way to get all those cm synths FREE.
If your budget is under 100 I'd get synthmaster because you can add some great bread and butter prog rock sounds in those Nori preset bundles, listen to the Nori demos at their website and you will know I am right.

Take a look at the Garritan stuff, sws2h. For the money, they cover an incredible range of orch sounds, and it runs in rtas like a dream.
Personal Orchestra sounds like it might be what you want for smaller sections, with actual different solo instruments for the violin 1, violin 2 etc. that can give you real 4 chair quartets, octets, on up. It also has ensemble sections to keep from running up a big cpu tab for fuller parts.
The prices aren't bad as is, (around $130 street) just remember you'll getting a whole orchestra, brass, woodwinds, a BIG orch percussion section and keyboards from Steinway to celeste, all VERY solid. Here's a link with all the info:

Also, for a more alt country/pop sensibility, IK's Miroslav Philharmonik has some great strings (and everything else) with lots of character that folks like Lana Del Rey and Gotye use. I like them a lot myself, often blended with the more tame GPO to add vibe. There's an MPO folder in Sampletank Free that's got a few patches to try on IK's site.
I've recently bought Kirk Hunter's Pop/Rock Strings for Kontakt, but haven't installed them yet. Lots of great stuff in the demos, but for more than the price of the others you only get strings. However, their new Easy String Arranger tool may be worth the price of admission, it's amazing for one finger folks like me!

What version of Pro Tools are you using?sws2h wrote:I'm looking for some string samples to use for pads and demos. I'm not a composer or arranger, so I don't need crazy tweaking and geeking.
Based on what plugins you already have, maybe you could buy a patch expansion or sample library?

Grab the free Embertone Intimate Strings Lite. I think it actually is a string quartet.
