I was looking at all of my old EWQL libraries (Storm Drum, Symphonic Choirs and Symphonic Orchestra Gold XP) and was thinking about upgrading to Storm Drum 2 and updating the rest to the Play virtual instrument.

However . . . I remember hearing horror stories about Play crashing and having problems.

So, for those that own EWQL libraries and use the Play engine - how is it? Do you like it? Does it crash? A lot? Not so much? Is it easy to use? Can I layer and stack sounds from the same and other libraries?

I am especially interested in those that use the Play engine with EWQL Symphonic Choirs, Orchestra Gold and Storm Drum 2, but am grateful for anyone's input.

Thanks.

Mike

I could never get it to run on XP. Ever.

I have never had it crash on me or had any problems whatsoever. I believe those issues were with previous versions of the Play engine, but no longer apply (at least in my experience).

I have the Composers Collection with all of the Platinum edition libraries, and it's very easy to use (or as easy as multi-gigabyte can be), and yes, you can layer sounds from multiple libraries with it.

edit: If it helps, I am still on Vista 32-bit. Not going to upgrade OS until I buy a new computer.

Are you using a different OS version now, and does it work with that?

PLAY these days is pretty stable for me (I have a fairly powerful computer so that probably helps) and I can't remember the last time it crashed on me. Currently running HOWG, HBG, HSG, and SOG.

The only issue I've had so far was trying to re-install SOG when I upgraded to Windows 8. SOG's installer must be too old or something (I think it has PLAY 1 or 2?) as it just would not install the library (it would error-out) so I had to copy things manually (http://www.soundsonline.com/Copy-Library-Manually). No big deal since I always create ISOs of my software DVDs anyway which speeds the process up.

Overall, I'm quite happy with EW products so far and, barring some complete disaster, will complete my orchestral collection when they release their percussion library to finish their Hollywood series.
