SN02-G is a no frills mono/stereo/mid-side needle VU meter VST plug-in. It features variable nominal reference level and an optional maximal value indicator (needle). It is optimized for 24'' HDTV screens and is designed to occupy minimal screen real estate while still preserving comfortable readability and fast access to all controls at low ASIO/CPU levels.

The fundamental feature of this plug-in is its lack of features.

Details:

  • two-in-one - operates both as (dual) mono or stereo meter depending on the track.
  • four fixed nominal reference levels for 0dBvu (-12, -14, -18, and -20 dBFS).
  • switchable display of summed mono on both meters, LR, or M/S (stereo tracks only).
  • optional needle for indication of maximal value with hold duration of 1 second.
  • sample peak leds with hold duration of 300 ms.
  • scribble strip (can be "peeled off" by deleting all text).
  • switching between normal GUI and a larger version (1.45x).
  • all controls directly accessible from the front panel.

I love TBProAudio mvMeter and dpMeter. That is my reference.

BUT... this lil' baby packs performance.
At half a MB, very realistic VU meter that adds <0.5% of processing to the mix.

Adjustable reference, HOLD on/off, stereo/mono.
And that's all there is.

But with metering, performance is the key.

So, 5 stars.

Why is the GUI "up and down" instead of "left and right"?

Because in this way you can stack them side by side more easily, i.e. you can fit more of them on the screen in a single row, which is IMO more legible than multiple rows.

Sender Spike, good job on this! Anyway a larger version could be made, or an button to display a larger size? The ballistics of your VU meter seems pretty on point. I can only assume Waves knows what they're doing when it comes to analog plugins, and yours displays very similar. A slight difference, but then again, theirs does not have a peak-hold, which I appreciate in yours. In comparison to the free mvMeter2, theirs reads maybe a little high. Level checking with pink noise and tones reveals that all are nearly identical, but for music and transients, it's all in the ballistics.

You can toggle the size by clicking on the SN02-G (default size) and SN02-GX (1.45x default size) text in the bottom right corner respectively. Alas, the plugin is optimized for 24'' HDTV (1080 lines) screens, so, that's that. Anyway, thanks for feedback :).

OK, thanks for pointing that out! The 1.45x size is perfect as I run 2560x1600 resolution. Thanks for making this plugin meter. I plan on using it as a possible replacement for mVmeter. (I am just demoing the Waves VU meter, which should be freakin' free).
