Sample playback sounds different from preview in the File Browser

Hi,

there seems to be something weird going on with my setup: Whenever I trigger a mapped drum sample it sounds just a little bit different from the preview of the File Browser. Even with a completely new project and or VST instance. Even without any "Sound" or root note assigned. The mapped sample sounds just slightly more "dampened" for lack of a better word, indepent from the volume. I could especially notice this when trying snare sounds and hihats. What could be the reason? As I said, I keep everything at default and it still happens.

I am gonna go out on a limb here and guess you are experiencing key velocity. Mapped sounds by default a velocity sensitive, preview is not. Try sending note-on at 127 or turn off velocity in sound parameters.

I don't think so, I have a Full Level button on my drumpad that plays with 127 velocity if necessary. Yet I've noticed that the preview default volume is louder than the mapped 127 velocity playback. But I still don't think it's just that. I've recorded the difference, please listen to the following:

The first four snare hits are previewed, the latter ones mapped playbacks at 127 velocity. Imo the frequencies don't seem exactly alike, I feel like the higher frequencies are a bit changed/dampened or brighter in the preview. I've tried to equalize the volume as well as I could. Do you hear what I mean? Please turn up the volume a bit.

Check your interpolation settings. Or even better. Send a program that repros this. With samples.

Please compare the mapped sample to the preview in the File Browser. Its the same sample as in my soundcloud link above.

Best regards!

Here is the performance loaded, but velocity in sound param object set to 0 (none). First four hits are preview, last four are mapped one. 1:1 identical as far as I can see. Recorded straight from the bus. All quality options set to default.

You are right, it's identical. What setting exactly do you refer to with "velocity in sound param object set to 0 (none)"? There are so many places where you can edit velocity options that I'm a bit confused about what to set to 0 exactly.

Velocity sensitivity. Sound params -> AEG section -> next to pan. Set to 0 for no velocity response.

Thank you. Apparently it has something to do with the windows WASAPI driver. Independent from the velocity settings: If I use asio4all or DirectAudio or the other options, playback and mapped sample sound alike. If I use Wasapi (exclusive or non exclusive), there is this difference that can be heard above.

Now that's weird, isn't it? Why does a driver produce different sounds WITHIN the same VST? Obviously this is my problem from now on, but out of curiosity, do you have any idea what may cause this behaviour in combination with TX16Wx?

Sample rate & interpolation mode. The preview will run with no interpolation (since it is playing at unity), while the mapped playback will use linear (or better) unless you set it lower explicitly. It the sample rate does not match the source material, there will be a slight difference in sound, as the driver interpolates "raw" stuff in the first case, and pre-interpolated in the second.
