I have plugins whose wup expired 2 years ago. I cannot use them anymore. Oh wait...I can.

That's amazing. Are you on Catalina? How did you get them to work?

If Catalina is your problem, blame Apple and your decision to switch too early...
For a running system I don‘t know of a single reason to upgrade now...

I stay on Mojave for some years, I have too many little 32-bit toys just for fun...

I'm done with Waves, they just gave away a FREE plugin!!!
