There are a few good books about this subject, I can't remember the titles at the moment but one was by Daniel Goldmark. Read about Carl Staling, Max Steiner, Scott Bradley and Milt Franklin, also Treg Brown regarding foley and sound effects.
Also, in the early 60's, some Tom and Jerry shorts were produced in (what was then) Czechoslovakia. The scores of these were pretty minimal but there were some awesome early electronic sound effects by Tod Dockstader. Check out the episodes made by Rembrandt Films.
It's a fascinating subject.

yeah the foley/sfx is to this day the go to sound when you think of a bump on the head "padoing! tweety birds"
its engrained in us.
they certainly had some skills, considering it was throwaway shite for kids really.

I always like Mission Impossible, Lost in Space and Pink Panther for whatever reason. They translate really well into modern versions as well.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

I can just imagine how that one came to be...
Producer: We're thinking the theme for this new show should be a little more contemporary.
Music Supervisor: That's great, I know some composers who would be thrilled to--
Producer: Well you see, there's this Rod Stewart song I really like...

I think they wanted to create a certain "vintage" explorer vibe. Well, i always skip the intros on the Star Trek series' with a few clicks anyway, so, no big deal.
I rather meant the films anyway, whose soundtracks were usually created my Jerry Goldsmith, as far as i'm aware of.
