Not only underspecing their hardware but are purposely crippling the ability to upgrade for the end user except for buying another computer...fmr wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 2:35 pmThat's curious. I was exactly thinking about that, but thinking to myself I was being paranoid. But as a matter of fact, Apple seems commited to trying to convince customers that their own CPU is more powerful than Intel CPUs and therefore paving the way for migrating their entire line of computers to their CPUs.dellboy wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 2:20 pm The Register thinks its all a cunning plan.............

Problem is that anyone informed sees how severely underspec their computers are, and that those lack in any aspect to the competition. Only die hard fans will be convinced by that pathetic "it even runs Photoshop now" argument.
Apple is a joke.

Returning back to here https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/10/3 ... ll_laptop/ does Apple CEO really believe what he says, or is it just he thinks there is a crowd who follows whatever they do anyway?

Were Macs ever affordable as opposed to a PC, though? Not as far as I know.
Apple products are grossly overpriced for their quality if you ask me.

Sadly i believe that it will happen. I mean it´s consumerism with a bit of prosumerism.stratum wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 4:55 pm Returning back to here https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/10/3 ... ll_laptop/ does Apple CEO really believe what he says, or is it just he thinks there is a crowd who follows whatever they do anyway?
But sad is also that the iPads cost now the same than macbooks pro in the past.
Apple will focus on iOS more and more of course. For music production they are indeed great but no replacement for a notebook yet. Maybe in some years.
Intel is sleeping away anyway and i won´t miss them.
But if they want it to really happen they could start with Logic Pro X for iOS f.e.
X-code is missing as well.
While iOS is still crippled i really think the iPads are great devices and far better than any other multi-touch device.
Macs will be dead in some years.

One cannot take an iPad to the office of a customer and fix bugs that appear only there using it. That's just one example.

If you wanted a Mac they were the cheapest way in. Didn't have the screen of the iMac to bump up the price. But now it feels like Apple are bumping up the prices of everything as they know they can get away with it.AsPeeXXXVIII wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 5:06 pm Were Macs ever affordable as opposed to a PC, though? I'm done with them at this stage. Not sure I'll bother upgrading my iPad even though it's running less and less software as time goes on.

Well the iPhone is overpriced yet it generates 60% of the profit share of all smartphones (no, not marketshare).stratum wrote: ↑Wed Oct 31, 2018 4:55 pm Returning back to here https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/10/3 ... ll_laptop/ does Apple CEO really believe what he says, or is it just he thinks there is a crowd who follows whatever they do anyway?

Yes, and that's because of that that Apple went that path. They thought (probably right) that if they could do that with the iPhone, they probably would manage to do the same with everything else. Essentially, that's all there is about it.
Sure, it takes a greedy company such as Apple to pull off all kind of wicked stunts - but without the folks camping for 4 days in front of Apple Stores to get the first new iStuff, things wouldn't work.
Back to topic: It's sort of almost amazing to me that you can actually upgrade the RAM on those Mac Minis yourself. I didn't expect anything like that to ever happen to any Mac again (apart from whatever Mac Pros).
Too bad this doesn't seem to work for the SSD, but then, carrying one with you (should you need the thing for mobile tasks) isn't too much of an issue anymore, and lack of bandwidth when using external drives is stuff from the past, too. There's also more connection options than what Apple would usually give you with their lower end machines, hence probably no need for any annoying HUBs at all.
Bottomline: While still not exactly cheap, this could be a pretty decent machine to run Logic.
And it might even be a decent machine for a live rig, in case you can control it from a touchscreen device.
