Warning. XLN Audio's installation/copy protection manager is updated and is no longer working with my wine-staging. I had working installs of Addictive Keys and Addictive Drums. I tried to add (bought) Retro Color, but after long fight I had to give up. I had to get working installs back from backup. Too bad. I would have liked to use Retro Color.

A while back, I got an IK Multimedia UNO hardware synth,
and after some experimentation and testing,
have arrived at a useful setup for it.

My guitars now connect to it's audio input,
either from the line-out of an effects rack,
or from a Fender GT40 modeling amp.

Midi is set up with both UNO and an 88 key Alesis sending
data to vsts, so UNO can sequence whatever plugins
are loaded, or with the sequencer off, blend in with
various plugins, very handy as familiarity grows.

It's also handy with sequenced basslines
and rythmic parts for the guitar,
and you could replicate several of the same presets in a row,
with different sequence data, should the urge strike
for sequence variations using the same sound,
that are easy to trigger.

The synth itself fits in well, and with a multi-effects plugin
on it's audio track, good times are :hyper: enjoying it with
U-he synths, IK Syntronik, Seaweed Audio's Fathom,
zynaddsubfx/yoshimi, and effects like Axiom, z3ta+,
Tamtra, Replika, Colour Copy/Twangstrom etc etc

For linux users, the IK firmware update app requires
win 8 or 10, so a friend or shop might be needed to do the task,
as the newer firmware versions fix a bus noise
some owners have when the synth is connected to
a computer usb port. I noticed that when linux is
booted off an SSD, UNO is far quieter than when running
on win7 running on a mechanical drive. And it's also
quieter when an ENV attack setting of 11 is dialed in :dog:

UNO is quiet when connected to a usb phone charger,
or run off 4 doubleAA batteries. Great fun at a very
reasonable price.

IK's Syntronik was on sale, and since the free version
was working and sounding well, I decided to risk
getting the full version. I also decided to install
the full version of IK's Sampletank 3, since Syntronik
integrates as an instrument in Sampletanks
16 part multitimbral gui.

I admit the long installation process, around 100 gig spread over
several dozen sample/instrument installers, felt a bit like strolling
on eggshells, and waiting for it to load the first time...
and then SILENCE...yeah, I'm the guy who gets to0 excited
to turn on the keyboard :dog: After that minor detail
was corrected, all was well, and I made a nice combi with
a Sampletank nylon guitar, a Syntronik pad, and a vocal
filler from IK's SonikSynth2, an underutilized collection
in it's own right. Oh, there'll be some romantic tunes
in the elevators

There is one flaw in Syntonik use, probably because
it's not on a setup with the official nvidia driver,
in the vertical preset selector centered on the gui,
the mouse pointer disappears after a selection until
you flick it out of that panel. But loading 50 to 200 meg
samples takes long enough, that a mouse gesture
has no serious effect.

Especially when focussed on assembling combis
from thousands of presets and samples. Syntronik
also has a special arpeggiator, it's own layering,
and a five-effect rack using favorites from
IK's Amplitube 4 and T Racks 5

Their registration app also 'just works', none of the
nonsense that is part & parcel of _ative _ccess
(even though that also has come under the linux looking glass,
and can be made to behave.) Since IK have just released
Sampletank 4, there may be some bargains appearing
for V3. There's nothing else like it on linux when
combining ease of use, and quality of sounds. It brings
an array of real world sounds to the synths from
U-he and discoDSP.

Another possibility might be getting sample packs
for Bitwig Studio, but that's out of both my time and price range.
Bitwig users, feel free to share your experience using
samples in your setups. These are good times for
linux audio in general. Cheers

This is good news!

FREEBIE alert!

Offer ends around 9 PM 3-9-19

free 5gig sampled Memory-V synth
that works in IK's free Syntronik, another
gig+ download, but it's a great instrument, many great
leads and pads, basses, some noise mapped on the keyboard yada yada
well worth the effort to make two accounts, download/install,
and grip the wine and reaper!

Speaking of IK, I got the little powerhouse UNO synth going
in a fresh linux boot, playing an arpeggio in loop mode,
then started the standalone Yoshimi synth as usual,
made the qjackctl connections, and the UNO hardware
was playing the yoshimi sound, so I added more parts
from the 16 available, and thought maybe I should start
the linux Reaper. It Started running without a glitch,
so I loaded the linux version of U-he Hive, and it was also
being played by UNO arpeggio. :dog: :hyper:
Added an older windows 32bit synthedit plugin, that was wrapped
by linvst, trying in vain to find some fly in the ointment,
but still all was well. So I adjusted the several volume controls,
hooked up the jack timemachine, and pressed record.
Good times at high tide

version 2.29 is out!

This is really improving at a great pace, the developer
walks his walk, backs up his talk, and thankfully, there's
plenty of talk when questions arrive, or suggestions are made.

I'm using it in wine-staging 4.6, with Reaper, seems working fine
like earlier releases, but faster gui, and considerable cpu/filter optimizations
also under the hood.

There is a free mono version, and a CM version from Englands
iconic Computer Music Magazine (with lots of tutorials)
Great sounding synth, and a simple intro to modular synths and flow connections,
works much like Patchage, and then click a module to launch it's settings panel.
The reverb and delay alone are worth the pro price.
Have a great weekend :)

Finally, the ilok-license-manager is working in Mint 18 linux.
I purchased a cheap AIR Hybrid 3 license a while back
assuming sooner or later, wine and reaper and linux
would converge on a working solution, and today
it all came together. :hyper

Here is what I have, and what I did:

Mint 18 with generic kernel 4.4
Latest Reaper
Wine-staging 4.6 from winehq
qjackctl linux jackd patchbay/config app
from the KX Studio repository

1. I renamed my existing .wine folder, and ran
winecfg which created a new one, and based on previous
wine successes, added the following dll over-rides:

mfc140
gdiplus
msxml3
d3d9
d3d10
d3d11

2. Created a bunch of folders replicating common paths
found in windows 7 setups, so the ilok installer would be happy.
3. Ran the ilok manager installer (which first installs BonJour
for networking)
Rebooted
4. Installed Hybrid 3, and granted the prompt that appeared
permission to repair BonJour, which it did, although it was probably
a nuisance wine glitch triggering that prompt
Rebooted
5. Started ilok-manager, and logged in to my account,
gave the manager the Hybrid 3 serial number,
and the gui reported the activation was complete.
6. Started Reaper, and twitched several times as
the 64 and 32 bit Hybrids were scanned
7. Chose Hybrid 3 on a new track, and grinned ear to ear
when the gui appeared in working order,
with the preset menu bursting at the seams.

The wine-staging team have made great progress in the
last few years. Have to keep my eyes peeled
for a few more bargain plugins to test.

Cheers edit: AIR's Vacuum is also working fine,

so it's not a fluke

It was nice, until I let the License Manager update itself :dog:
The new version isn't working yet, but it doesn't take much to
start a fresh empty wine, so I'm going to use the older version again
and take notes., if not hostages :hihi:

A Hive 2 release candidate is available,

viewtopic.php?f=31&t=525688

Mainly for final testing the upgrade process, and a
lucky-bug hunt. The new gui alone is worth
the $23 upgrade. 378 new presets, new wavetables,
with progammable wavetable support for those happy
scripting warriors...and the awesome sound just get's better.

Hive is one of the best remedies for deeeeppppprrrrresssssssionnnnn,
bad moods, and bordom (sleepy muse syndrome)
Kids need a summer project? Mom needs a break from the kitchen?

Hive isn't hard to use, throw in a Reaper license,
and change the family history

Good wisdom in the article, applying it in linux will
of course be different, but the steps are there to get things rolling

Some linux users will have win 10, the article mentions

to guide the turning off of un-needed srvices. Guides for older win versions
