typing in a plugin

Is there a way to send keystrokes to plugins?

I have a Kontakt instance on a track, and I was trying to rename the instrument, but it appears to send no keystrokes. This appears to be the case with other plugins as well.

pardon me if this has been addressed, but I couldn't find anything relevant in a search of the forum.

i'm on osx 10.3, by the way.
