I'm having a hard time getting a hard time getting a smooth lead sound with EEG and I really don't know the best place to start. The amp sim I use is Amplitube 3 Free. I can get new equipment through their Custom Shop, but the less I have to buy, the better. Other suggestions for free alternatives are welcome as well.

For reference, this is the kind of sound I'm hoping to get close to - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYQEOw2t3UA - the lead starting at about 0:25. If anyone has any tips for getting a sound similar to that with EEG, it would be very much appreciated.

A lot of it is going to be is the right amp/cab, and then the right amount of distortion, etc. In terms of the actual guitar playing, I would recommend using a patch such as the "Shredding Lead" preset.

Try out the great free guitar amp plugin, Shred, which is available here: http://www.acmebargig.com/product/shred/

You can get some pretty close tones to the ones in the video using this plugin. For example, the "Lainee Custom Franken" preset. The "Terry Sitts Very Hairy" (which was actually made by another Evolution Electric Guitar Strawberry user!) preset is also a really cool lead tone as well.

Be sure to use the vibrato on sustained notes, too! :)

Thanks for the advice. The vibrato definitely helps, and having more amp sims to work with is always nice.

I actually found some advice in another thread that let me get really close to the sound I was looking for, and there was one element that was the key to making it happen - put an EQ between Kontakt and the amp sim. I found that if I cut the highs before amping it, it gave me that smooth sound I was looking for.

I sequenced EEG to play along with the original track from the video. It could still use some tweaking, but here's an MP3 of the result I got.
