Setup for a small digital home studio for surround HELP

Hi,

Could you please help me in chosing the right components that I need in order to build a small studio that works to compose in 5.1 and or 7.1 and DTS? Basically I wish to do DVD audio.

I am a solo musician and which to hear what is comming out of the DAW without and added effect aswell. Thus to have the sound monitored completely flat.

FYI I will be using bidule.

I need help in chosing the right hardware.

Do I need a sourround sound controller between the soundcard and the active monitors?
