Didn't the Pet Shop Boys use one of these on their first album? If I remember right, the track was called 'Two Divided By Zero'.
Analogue or digital – which is better? There's only one way to find out... FI-I-IGHT!!!

Splash the cash on this stuff by all means, but you owe it to yourself to have a go first. You'd be amazed at how easy this stuff is. Pop down the charity shop, buy a toy, crack it open, get a length of wire, go nuts. You don't even need a soldering iron to experiment with this stuff. Knowledge of electronics is a big minus.
Of course they'll tend to break more quickly if you're a crap solderer like me. Here's one I made a while ago (RIP). Recorded through headphones plugged into the mic socket while balanced on my knee, hence poor quality.

Don't try it on anything that plugs into the mains, it goes without saying.

Yep, I've got a Speak&Math, Speak&Read, a Talking Teacher, and a few other odds and ends that have been waiting to be bent for years now. I'm sure I'll get around to it sooner or later...
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
