You flip the Mid/Side parts of a stereo signal.
If you took a mono signal and spread it over two channels, the effect is sort of a maximum stereo. It's not easy on the ears either.

it makes it sound weird. i can feel the difference in my left and right ears. I bet it also changes the air pressure and response of your listening enviornment, because of the acoustics.

... and if these two signals are added to each other you will phase out the signals that are similiar on both channels (the mono stuff). If a vocal i recorded in mono and panned center, then this will be phased out (muted), but probobly there is some stereo processing on the track, so you will be left with the differences between these two tracks.
