I would highly recommend putting together some reverb in reaktor or Max or pure data. It allows for all types of fun experimentations. If you don't want to go that in depth, then Melda MTurboreverb has it's super fun algorithm designer that allows you to set up as many nested all pass filters, EQs, Combs, feedback paths, delays, and other stuff as you'd like in a setup that takes just a couple minutes to figure out.
The point being, that you can make a ton of unique reverbs that have tons of character (regardless of their ability to mimic a real space) out the wazoo with readily available tools.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

You probably already own it but Valhalla Vintage Verb is exactly this. The algorithms are all based on digital reverbs from the 70s and 80s with all of their modulation artifacts, high frequency roll, low bit rates, etc. available.

Also the Relab LX480 is a hyper accurate circuit modeling of the original hardware, saturates beautifully if you drive it.

Goodhertz Megaverb is patterned in part on the Alesis reverbs
Valhalla Supermassive is a good alternative - it doesn't have to be massive

I wish the options in VVV were less obtuse. It’s difficult to know what “model” it’s trying to approximate. I know, just use my ears, but there are too many variables and nuances.

I agree it can be more fun in a way to have circuit models of specific units as Relab do, but Sean from Valhalla has never taken that approach, he typically describes his algorithms as being "loosely inspired" by certain machines rather than pure emulations.

He does make some specific references though, like this blog post that mentions Lexicon hardware when talking about the Dirty Hall and Dirty Plate algos, and the Quantec QRS when talking about the Palace algo. https://valhalladsp.com/2023/02/10/valh ... -the-modes

Also, some mad lad put together a google doc with more notes and references. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

Incredible, I love it.

I wonder who that daft loon was!

Spoiler: it was me. :)

Haha! Nice one, thank you sir.

I modified the analog hardware of my Quadroverb to try to reduce the analog noise (aka character!).

you can get in the ballpark of alesis's bloom with valhalla shimmer.
See this post for the settings: https://valhalladsp.com/2010/12/02/valh ... cks-bloom/
notable also a user comment with further tweaks below the blogpost.

https://www.voxengo.com/product/oldskoolverb/ is quite tweakable and has character

https://tal-software.com/products/tal-reverb-4 has controls for bit depth and sample rate for retro vibes

I haven't compared these to a Quadraverb tho.

I remember when I bought my Quadraverb back in the day. It was the last unit left in the store: "Julio Iglesias' sound engineer came earlier and bought four of them, he is in town on tour right now and all of their reverbs went kaput during a storm". The shop's clerk was so happy ...
