Overdubbing Pitch-Bend with Built-in Instruments

This can't possibly be right. It has to be user error. What I'm seeing is that it's not possible to re-record or overdub MIDI pitch-bend performance from a hardware wheel into an existing clip that contains notes for one of the built-in instruments. The pitch wheel moves can be recorded at the same time the notes are recorded, but they get recorded as micro-pitch inflections that are attached to the notes, NOT as MIDI pitch-bend data. And once the micro-pitch inflections are in the notes, they can't be re-recorded. They can only be edited by hand.

How do I re-record (overdub) MIDI pitch-bends into a track that contains existing notes that are played by the built-in instruments?
