Unfortunately, I've exported the Mac versions & sent the VST to a customer to test, but alas it still does not work. Windows VSTs seem fine, but the mac exports don't show.

2.8.4 works fine. Your customer needs to verify which OS system they are using. If you are using the 2.8.4 MSE files then anything below OS Sierra will not work. The trick is to export the VST using 2.8.4 and use 2.5.7 or 8 for MSE. Just place the MSE files inside the instruments folder and it will work with OS systems 10.9 and above. Also suggest a restart after installing
