Thanks. Makes sense. Well, might as well just dive in, put up a work in progress track and see what people think and then start making adjustments. Maybe via this process I can actually get it "right" and learn something at the same time.

I mean what have I got to lose?
ps: unaspected not unexpected ;)
Thank you. :)

This is what I was thinking of when I posted a few pages back. Something like this would be a much better way to gauge mixing and processing skills.

One of our members here, thejonsolo, took one of my songs and not only remixed it but completely redid the arrangement. Turned it into a completely different song. I think the improvements are glaringly obvious but I'll let you all judge.

I'm going to use this as a guide for songs I do in the future. Hopefully, there will be an improvement.

All comments are welcome.

Loving the guitar solos, they sound more authentic.
Currently trying to turn noise into music. Is boutique the new old?

Yeah, he has to teach me how he does that. Totally blew me away.

1st track from my upcoming CD "2020"

Using Jon's track as a guide, this is what I came up with. Hopefully, it's an improvement over my usual mixes.

A Whole New Start

Out with the old
In with the new
Turning the page
Thinking of you

Comfort was there
When I needed it most
But now it is time
To move to the coast

A whole new start
In this life of mine
The life I had
I guess it was fine
But now I want
So much more
It's time to find
What living's really for

Funny how things
Never seem like they are
Funny how dreams
Seem to be so far

Watching my life
Just drift away
Now where I am
There's no reason to stay

Repeat Chorus

I'll become the man that I was meant to be
I'll become the man I want the world to see

Repeat Verses 1 and 2

Repeat Chorus

2nd track from my upcoming CD "2020"

I want to thank thejonsolo for all the help he's been giving me on my production skills, or lack thereof. I spent a lot more time on this track than usual. Oh, and thanks for all the great comments on my last track. They were really helpful.

Pieces Of A Life

Down in the dirt
I can see
What it's all
Come to be

I've been a fool
Way too long
Searching for right
Finding it wrong
Oh so wrong
Oh so wrong

And now I find
All around me
Crashing to earth
Pieces of a life not meant to be
Pieces of a life not meant to be

Destiny waits
But not for I
Missed all the clues
Life passed me by

Do it again
If only I could
The question remains
Think that I should

Repeat Chorus

I hear them come
To take me away
Fighting to live
One more day

Repeat Chorus

I'm liking what Jonsolo did mixing-wise.
"Crashing to earth
Pieces of a life not meant to be"... loved the chord progression, and the guitars here. Good energy changes.
@2:12 interesting surprise. @2:32 Nice synth phase.
@2:52 another surprise. You've got a good habit of making your arrangements unpredictable enough to keep me listening to find out what you're going to do next!

Actually, I mixed the track. I just followed his general instructions that he sent to me for arranging and mixing. He has made a world of difference.

Of course when he hears my latest I am sure he's going to make corrections. He's a perfectionist and he's trying to get me to be one as well. I think I have a long road ahead of me but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Hmm I responded earlier but my post did not go through.

Yes I am OCD, ha! Here is some public commendation:

Great improvement on the arrangement. It is an odd song...at least at first. Suddenly I am reminded of Klaatu. And then it works for me. Keep heading in this direction production wise. Use the ideas on all of your tracks. It gets your ideas across so much better.

Good work!

Thanks Jon. Yes, this will be my work ethic from now on. I may not end up writing as much but what I do I think will be a lot better and also a lot different from what I usually do.

Thank you again for everything you've done for me. You have no idea how much I appreciate your help.

Great work Jon.

See Wags, this is a great part of what I was trying to lead you to all along.

It is a kooky song but it is very Waggy and once the arrangement has more detail and the spark that Jon brought, it lifts so far.

We are almost all better off working together more than apart.

:-)

Which just goes to show, there is even hope for me.

Having said that, I have a long way to go. I still think some of the arrangement transitions can be smoother. That will come as my performance improves. And of course, I need to stay disciplined. Working this way was real culture shock to me and was not easy. And, if I'm totally honest, not as enjoyable because it was real work. And that's what separates the amateurs from the professionals. Real work.

I'm excited to see where this new work ethic takes me,

Can I have a quick summary of what has happened here? :)

Sounds great. Total level up from your previous tracks :tu:

Kinda reminds me of those happy tv tunes from the 80's. Happy days etc. And maybe a little bit of Wham.
