The only "optimization" that had any effect for me was setting the processor scheduling to "Background services". I could push my buffer setting lower without any crackling.

It's not a bad idea to look through what your DAW and Audio Interface provider recommends:

Steinberg has something similar: https://helpcenter.steinberg.de/hc/en-u ... orkstation

Only thing I want from Win10 is not to boot itself or run windows update/any update/any housekeeping while I'm working (WinUpdate still takes shitloads of CPU for some reason).
Thats why I foresee at least Windows Update service being ran on my account aka not being able to run it...
And mac is not an option ever anymore.

1903 has some options that you can pause/delay updates, for up to 30 days, i think. So, yeah, there's at least rudimentary control over that now.

I removed all bloat and disabled unneeded services and did some other performance optimizations.

Regarding the "bloat": Be careful with that... some apps are deeply integrated into the system, and, it can be problematic to remove those. Think Cortana, Edge and some other stuff.

I wrote bloat in inverted commas, because it highly depends on the user what he considers "bloat" and what he doesn't. I could also argue that Mac OS X comes with loads of bloat, when i don't need all those apps. Or, i embrace that they are present, and make broad use of them.

Bloat like Candy Crush in the start menu. I suppose someone "might" need that. ;) But overall, it's not a necessary app to be in the Start menu.

It's interesting to see how things have changed since Windows 95 days. Back then you had no choice but to tune to get performance, and it was multiple things. Today, not so much, if anything at all.

Alright. Absolutely no problem with removing Candy Crush. :)

Yeah, on 1903 one cannot change the user of the service, it'll be "remedied" back and update is taking shitloads of CPU periodicly :(
I'll have to script it again and task schedule the script to disable winupdate every 5 minutes.. only way to work :(

What on Earth are you talking about? I just looked and my PC hasn't checked for updates in more than 24 hours, last time I switched it on. I worked on it for 5 hours last night and it didn't check once. The Windows Update Service itself uses a whole 28MB of RAM, hardly worth worrying about.

Well, that script keeps winupdate service down. Its enough for me again.
Maybe it'll work on audio machine too in the future..

But why would you go to all that trouble? The chances of an update breaking anything are miniscule.

Trouble is miniscule as basically its just saying sc winupdate stop&disable every 5 minutes invisibly to the user.
My trouble has been: CPU drained immediately when opening laptop making it unusable for anything else, Update waking laptop up without enough battery, Updating when not suitable.
This shall not happen on my desktop Win10 so I'm testing it on this laptop. Unaccetable to have winupdate rob a lot of CPU when I'm doing audio session, as the fear is this'll affect realtime audio. Other thing is I'll boot the machine when I want, not OS thank you. I'm still on Win7SP1 but next machine cannot be for various reasons (of one is old PCI audiocard).

Finished my upgrade this weekend. Tried running Cubase 10 Pro at 256 samples (what I normally do) and everything worked perfectly fine without a single tweak to the OS. Now I did eventually do the common tweaks like turning of USB power saver and setting CPU to 100%, but other than that, it wasn't needed like back in the days of Windows XP.

...not bother to remove all the excess bloat and garbage that MS makes you install and everything still runs smoothly on your system? Just curious if it's worth the effort or not?
Personally I'm lazy :). So no, I don't do that, but I usually build my own computers, so... But with laptops, I like Dell high-end stuff, and it doesn't seem to come with a lot of garbage. Anyways, only programs that ARE running are the problem. So personally I'd avoid antiviruses (these are just horrible...), just install one once in a while, let it check everything, and remove it. And other "pseudosecurity" stuff like that. But computers rarely come up with that. If you have stuff like MS Office demo installer, it really doesn't matter imho. I think the most important thing is to buy a good computer from a good manufacturer, not Jing Chi for example (I just made that up :D ). I have very good experiences with Dell and Lenovo.
