lwj wrote: Fri Aug 16, 2019 6:56 pm Never too sure what to say about ambient.. I mean, it's supposed to make you go quiet right? This is cool though (desolation), smooth at the surface but there's some nice darkness that peeks out here there. Lamentations has similar vibe, but more defined.. You could definitely make a cool soundtrack out of these.
Well, my goal is to get a production music site to accept this stuff and for somebody doing some kind of video to use one of the tracks as background music. It's kind of a crap shoot but I figured why not give it a shot.

I'll let everybody know if anything comes of it.

yeah, it immediately made me think of that. I studied film originally and when I had to come up with a soundtrack quickly this kind of stuff would be great. Especially if you keep it all somewhat in the same key so an editor can mix it up a little. Have you thought about selling on those game asset marketplaces, like Unreal and Unity?

Thought about it? I never even heard of them.

Hmm, you're missing an opportunity then.
Gaming is even more saturated than music at the moment.. so what you get is a lot of tiny studios making games with tiny budgets. They get a lot of their assets from those marketplaces, like 3d models, bits of code, animations, textures.. and music & sound fx

Well, it's certainly something to look into. I'm keeping my options open to pretty much anything.

Listened to Ancient Mysteries.

I enjoyed it. I found the sounds and structure interesting. The mix sounded pretty well balanced.

Hello dear, here is a review about your music, to return the favour.

I've listened to many songs on your soundcloud.

What in general came to my attention, was, in the musical "Tunes":
- There is too much Reverb Wet Out on a lot of your (individual sound) tracks.
- The sounds (and reverb) sound rather unaltered and generic (especially the horns).

I loved the ambient tunes.

One tip I would like to give you, is to turn off the hardware synthesizer reverb,
and see if you can add some more sophisticated and filtered reverb sections with a computer.

There are good VST reverb generators out there for free, I use these:
- FreeVerb2, from the Audacity WIKI section
https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/GVerb#Freeverb2
- Abstract Chamber by Signaldust - Reverb VST Plugin - KVR page
download AbsctractChamber VST from archive.org wayback machine (website is off)
- Virtual Studio, preset 4: Big Venue, from BeyerDynamic
http://europe.beyerdynamic.com/service/downloads - search for "virtual studio"
and send selective mid and high to it

When you work with synthesizer presets, it is good practice to record the synthesizer presets / sections dry and add effects later. Would also like to encourage you to dig more into sound design / sculpturing with more sophisticated filter and other enveloppes on sound, to perhaps automate / control the settings in these enveloppes. Your ambient work sounds beautiful and has a much more sophisticated sound design which I can not find back in your Wag"Tunes". The music would also advance on gain(stage-)ing certain parts, over time, in the track, to create more dynamic long-time builds. The silence in between the notes make the music..

Good luck in your tuneaging.

I appreciate you took the time to listen to what I made.

As I have no idea what you listened to, other than the current ambient tracks, much of the material on Soundcloud is old and done before I now do all the things you said to do. But thanks anyway.

I've listened to the first 17 tracks in your soundcloud "Tracks" section as of currently.

As I have no idea what they are, I can't comment further. I can assure you though, I do not use any hardware synths or reverbs, do everything in the box and use sends for FX.

Like I said, I have a lot of stuff up there that is simply not any good. But I've come a long way since then.

If you can give me specific examples of bad mixes or whatever, I can then respond. Otherwise, I assure you I am now aware of how to mix a track properly.

Anyway, I've gone to Music Vine to try to get some idea of what to tackle next so I listened to a crap ton of music. And I mean a CRAP ton.

Here's what I seem to find constant among a wide variety of styles.

1. Melody lines are very minimal. Intervals of 2 or 3 notes at most.

2. Not many chords in the progressions but lots of inversions.

3. Many changes throughout as far as arrangement. This seems to be the key element to keeping interest since musically, these songs are very simple, No verse, chorus, bridge or anything like that. It's one motif with lots of arrangement variation.

4. Mixes vary but a wide variety are sparse in dynamics. Lots of wav files that look square all the way across. Yes, there are exceptions. But mixes in general are excellent. This is where I'm really going to have to bust my butt to get something approved.

However, it seems like I can write just about anything as far as instrumentation goes. I've yet to hear any vocals though I know there are some. Since I can't sing to save my life, I'm going to stick to instrumentals.

I still don't know what I'm going to tackle next. I might spend this whole week just listening to music and then starting on my next project next Monday. By then I should have a pretty good idea.

I don't understand you. You order me not to speak to you and to stay away and yet here you are. So you're allowed to come into my thread and say whatever you like but I'm supposed to ignore you. Doesn't seem very fair to me, but whatever. I'm only responding here to make sure I got the ground rules correct.

Starting my next collection. Decided on doing kind of quirky, jazzy possible TV themes. I'm not finding anything like this up there so I could end up finding a niche or totally bombing out with this approach. Risky, but felt it was worth taking a chance. Will be doing 12 of these.
