Is there a cheap/free tape wear plugin available?

I like Reels a lot too, but it's 64 bit only and I've never seen it go for less than 40 euro. If there were a 32 bit cutdown version (top row controls only) for around 20 euro, then I'd buy it instantly. But I doubt that will ever happen.

Yesterday I tried a combination of Airwindows Iron Oxide, Deckwrecka and ToTape5 on an acoustic drum kit that comes with Maschine. Usually I don't bother with these drum kits, but the combination of these three plugins completely transformed the sound of it. Judging on this I just know Chris can knock the Tape Wear plugin out the box.

Iron Oxide5 and ToTape5 are excellent plugins. FromTape for single channels is very nice as well.

Especially like the the inverse function on io5 for cleaning things up in a weird way.

I look forward to plastering this new cassette plugin over a project.

So you need REALLY trashed tape? Like, completely bonkers flutter, dropouts, oxide coming off?

I've listened to some amazing music based on that concept. That guy who did tape loops and just played them until they decayed and fell apart. Do you want me to come up with something that takes tape damage a lot farther than usual? It could be a fun challenge. Maybe to combine with my other stuff, not expand/replace it?

(makes little note) I'll see what I can do. Might not be right away but this seems like a cool idea.
This is self - destructive in the most beautiful way. Awesome idea Chris from Airwindows and I am sure you (as always) already having some great ideas about where to go with this one.

So just a humble inspiration from what Hainbach did with this concept:

It's not self-destructive TO ME. Who else gets to do stuff like that as part of their regular work? :D

The tape loops, on the other hand: now that is art, and very evocative and vibey too :)

We need that tape + scalpel/knife emulator.

Don't forget the sand paper. :D

Wow and Flutter is basically Vibrato, Tremolo and Chorus with a bandpass filter to make it sound aged. If you need a really good Vibrato, Tremolo and Bandpass plugin check out Melda's free efx bundle.
This right here.

Anybody else automate the tape speed slider of Iron Oxide Classic? Love it sounds like a warbled tape strip.

ToneBoosters ReelBus 4. Hands down best tape simulator, from subtle master bus saturation to destructive tape wear. Comes in both 32 and 64 bit plugin and is really cheap

Yes, ToneBoosters are definitely best value for money, especially with their 25% off deal (ends today). The last couple of days I've been trying out ReelBus 3 and 4. In general I like 3 more than 4, but 4 has got the wear function I want, so that's the one I just purchased. This was a deal I couldn't pass up.

I was hoping for Chris to present his tape wear plugin first, but I'm sure his plugin will also get a lot of use as it will probably sound a bit different and hopefully go way beyond ReelBus' maximum wear setting. After watching those tape loops videos I'm really looking forward to using that disintegration effect in my beats. 8)

William Basinski, I'm guessing?

Anyway, nothing free/cheap that's an all-in-one; you're going to need some compression, saturation and EQ first... there's too many decent freebies in those departments for me to get all "name every plugin" about it.
For the warble, you could try either Wow and Flutterhttp://www.interruptor.ch/vst_donationware.shtml
or de la Mancha's Unstable https://delamanchavst.wordpress.com/201 ... -for-free/.
Add a filter you can automate in your DAW (a smoothed random setting works well, adjust speed and range to taste), play with settings and plugin order until you're happy, then save your chain, et c'est tout.

Discontinue use if rash or irritation develops.

Another interesting (maybe also inspiring) one:

https://enmoreaudio.com/tape-loops-and- ... ver-knows/
Five separate tape machines around the Abbey Road building were used to record the track. Each machine was controlled and monitored by an EMI technician, holding a single pencil or glass tumbler within their assigned piece of quarter inch tape to maintain tension as they watched it pass through the capstan and past the playback head, endlessly repeating itself.

While the techs took to their post, the four lads from Liverpool took charge of the faders on the main console in Studio 3, while Martin varied the stereo panning, and the then 19 year-old engineer Geoff Emerick monitored the meters for levels as they recorded take after take, live to the master tape.

As Paul recalls, “We played the faders, and just before you could tell it was a loop, before it began to repeat a lot, I’d pull in one of the other faders, and so, using the other people, ‘You pull that in there,’ ‘You pull that in,’ we did a half random, half orchestrated playing of the things and recorded that to a track on the actual master tape, so that if we got a good one, that would be the solo. We played it through a few times and changed some of the tapes till we got what we thought was a real good one.”
...interesting because this is not only tape -loop (history) related; yet also to Chris's future - streams about exactly this topic in general. I believe its Thursday (same time as the Monday Q&A's) and will begin with the patreon Goal $1500.

Looking #ffw to All of the mentioned Above!
